  13. Types of Resume A common misconception is that there s only one way to write a resume. There s actually a variety of resume formats, and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Depending on your specific skill set or work history, one format might be better suited to highlight your qualifications than another. There are four main types of resumes: Chronological resumes Functional resumes Targeted resumes Combination resumes B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV

  14. Chronological Resumes A chronological resume opens with an introduction, and then provides an overview of your professional history in reverse-chronological order (meaning your most recently held position is listed at the top). The chronological resume format is the most common type of resume used by job seekers today, and is suitable for candidates with a variety of different experience levels. Mostly, this type of resume is ideal for those with a solid, gap-free work history inline with the type of job you are applying for. The WorkHistory or ProfessionalExperience sections of this type of resume are the most pronounced and span between eight to ten years depending on the number of years at your prior institutions. Start with your most recent position and work backward listing both dates and responsibilities. It is not necessary to go back ten years unless the experience is relevant to your job search. B.Sc. 15. Chronological Resumes

  16. Functional resume A functional resume is formatted to focus on your skills and abilities, rather than your chronological work history. It s preferred by professionals who want to draw attention away from their traditional work experience, such as those who are changing careers or have significant gaps in their work history. While similar to other resume formats, functional resumes are unique a few key ways: The resume introduction and skills section are longer and more detailed than usual. The work experience section is de-emphasized ( Play down). B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV

  17. Functional resume

  18. Targeted resume A targeted resume can be chronological, functional, or combination but is targeted specifically to the position for which you are applying. Work History, Skills, and Education sections are carefully constructed to emphasize the job requirements using exact keyword matching from the description. You will be required to research the company s mission statement or vision as well as company culture and mirror those beliefs genuinely. A targeted resume is especially helpful when applying online to help you overcome or rank higher in the applicant tracking systems used by companies today. This means highlighting any highly relevant skills and experience you have, and writing your resume to focus on these qualifications. To write a strong targeted resume, scan through the job listing for the position you want to fill. Typically, hiring managers include the skills, responsibilities, and traits that they want candidates to possess in the job description. Then, highlight these qualities on your resume to demonstrate that you re an ideal fit for the position (if you have them). B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV

  19. Combination resume A combination resume is a format that (true to its name) combines the best aspects of a functional resume and a chronological resume. While a chronological resume focuses heavily on experience and a functional resume emphasizes skills, a combination resume typically leverages both work history and skills equally to demonstrate your qualifications. Combination resumes are ideal for candidates who have extensive experience or a highly developed set of skills that they want to showcase. B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV

  20. The Structure of a Combination Resume Header Include your name, email address, phone number and location. If applicable, midcareer applicants should consider adding links to their LinkedIn profiles, professional website or online portfolio. Professional summary Your professional summary should be two to five sentences that highlight the most impressive skills and experience you have cultivated up to this point in your career. Summary of qualifications Your summary of qualifications should include information about your degrees, relevant training, academic achievements and a high-level overview of your professional skills. Key skills B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV

  21. Study the job ad to determine the most critical hard and soft skills for the role. Then, add in any other relevant skills and training that will make you stand out. Since a combination resume focuses on skills and experience, feel free to make this a comprehensive list. Work history List your work experience in this section in reverse-chronological order, with your most recent job at the top of the list. This section should be detailed, so be sure to include any metrics that will highlight your professional successes. Education List your advanced degrees in reverse-chronological order. If you don t have a college degree, list your high school diploma or GED in this section. Otherwise, leave it off. B.Sc. Agriculture, SemesterIV Ability and Skill Enhancement Module IV
