CONNECTIONS THROUGH TRAINING Connecting Career Services to the New Mexico Workforce System, Development Workshops and more! Expanding workforce resources to community colleges and university campuses. Creating workshops that are pathways to help address any questions your audience may have in regards to potential careers. Discovering individuals motivations and how to make the process of resume development and interviews relevant to your audience.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR AUDIENCE College students First-time workers Not in Workforce for some time Remember: You are the expert on skills, knowledge, and information pertaining to these workshops. History has revealed that most are not aware of what they do not know.
THE ESSENTIALS Why Offer Your Trainings Goals For the individual to gain employment. Objectives Proper techniques to writing a resume/cover letter and completing a successful interview. Outcomes Conduct mock interview, address any red flags, review resumes and provide guided feedback. Set the Standard High!
RESUME GUIDANCE Resume workshops are a great place for providing relevant information and handouts. Utilize resources such as resume builders: Workforce Connections On-Line System, Aggie Career, etc. When the position description is limited, refer to LINK: O*NET ONLINE. Translate relevant skills that apply to the desired position.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Customize resumes and cover letters to the job one is applying for (have several resumes prepared). When possible, always provide information that can be quantified. Research, research, research! (company culture, job, etc.). Do not exaggerate or lie on a resume, the employer will expect the truth. Have paper copies but also electronic copies for quick editing and upkeep.
INTERVIEWING Teaching students how to present themselves as competent, motivated, caring professionals who are well qualified and prepared for the job. - Makely, 2017. Address different types of interviews Formal interviews, Panel interviews, etc. Emphasize that interviews should be professional but also organic. Help prepare your audience for the unexpected. Practice mock interviewing and ask difficult questions that make the individual think.
SKILLS AND WORKING WITH ADULTS Define skills- hard skills, soft skills, adaptable skills, transferable skills, and job-specific skills. Relevant skills- application of relevant skills to the desired position. Motivation- provide encouragement and guidance to your audience. Process- tailoring the path of career development to each individual.
ENSURING SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES Stay organized- and plan ahead. Follow up- for feedback, always room for improvement. Utilize resources- NMDWS, DOL, LinkedIn, USA jobs, YouTube, etc. Find what best works for you and your audience.
