Empowering Students Through Global Outreach for Language Education Reform

The Global Outreach SSAC Workgroup, a student-led initiative, aims to enhance world language and culture education in Massachusetts. By promoting cognitive benefits, creating global citizens, and revitalizing language teaching, the group seeks to implement a Foreign Languages Curriculum Framework in schools. Through outreach efforts, they aim to engage stakeholders, grow support, and present at conferences to drive legislative change. Challenges include bridging departmental divides and accelerating the approval process. The ultimate goal is to develop a proposal bill by the end of the summer.

2. Who are we? SSAC Workgroup created this FY19 A group of students looking for stronger world language and culture education and reform in Massachusetts 2

3. Why do we do this? Cognitive benefits of learning another language Ultimate purpose: produce a globalcitizen Reinvigorate teaching of languages and excite students about process and worldcultures Minimal learning, yet maximumprogression Standards are tooloose 3

5. The Global OutreachNetwork The Global Outreach Network is a student-led social media platform working to promote cultural awareness, appreciation of diversity, and global citizenship, especially by means of increased foreign language education 5

6. FLE In order to institute FLE earlier in the publicschool system (4th grade) and focus specifically on the critical languages, we first need to establish a baseline: High-school graduation requirement, minimum of two years worth of credits 6

7. Steps Contact District Superintendents, State Legislators, and most importantly, students Growing the Network: - greater support - student-driven initiative - legal change 7

8. Future Steps Reaching out to contacts by email, phone call, interpersonal connection Continuing to grow the platform Presenting at MFLA(FY20) 8

9. Challenges Disconnect between Department andstudents Critical feedback from students for Language Framework Slow rate of approval/permission Students want to be involved in everystep! 9
