Reform Efforts in Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System in Tanzania
The Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) in Tanzania is responsible for vital event registration, insolvency services, and trusteeship services. The history of birth registration in Tanzania dates back to the colonial era, with separate systems for Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Laws governing civil registration include the Births and Deaths Registration Act, the Law of Marriage Act, and the Law of the Child Act. Recent efforts to reform the CRVS system include a comprehensive assessment and engagement with the Law Reform Commission of Tanzania for a legal framework review.

History of Birth registration in Tanzania Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar have separate civil registration systems as registration of vital events is not a union matter. However, now more than 50 years since independence rates are still low to the extent that we cannot reliably use the statistics produced for evidence based decisions
