Luke Part 1 Lesson 1
Luke 1:1-4 What? The author investigated carefully everything that had been taught to Theophilus and himself vs. 3-4 He was NOT an eyewitness Servants of the word: teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ (Amp. Bible) He wrote in consecutive order so we can know the exact truth
Luke 1:5-7 Who? Zacharias He and Elizabeth had no children Both advanced in years Both were from Levitical descent Both righteous and blameless before the Lord Both made an impact in their community because of their walk
Luke 1:5 When? In the days of Herod the Great King of Judea Reigned from 40-4 BC, during Christ s ministry Jesus refers to him as that fox Lk. 13:32 King that gave John the Baptist s head on a platter to Herodias s daughter Mt. 14:11 Married his brother s wife for which John rebuked him Killed anyone that was a threat to his throne, including family members
Luke 1:8-10 Timing: while Zacharias was serving as priest before God in the appointed order of his division (Ex. 30:7-8; I Chron. 24:1-19) Probably once in a lifetime opportunity Chosen BY GOD through lots to burn incense People outside the temple are praying and watching for the smoke to appear
Luke 1:11-14 Gabriel appears to the right of the altar of incense. RIGHT WHERE HE IS, and breaks the 400 years of silence Do not be afraid Your petition has been heard Elizabeth will bear a son and you will name him John: God named him Many will have joy and gladness and will rejoice at his birth, including you.

Knowledge and holy love of the will of God
Malachi 3:1; 4:5-6 John fulfilled these prophecies made hundreds of years before He was God s messenger to clear the way before the Lord came His job was restoring hearts, turning Israel to the Lord He was a forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah
Luke 1:18-20 Zacharias: didn t believe what the angel said (vs. 20) Mute until these words were fulfilled Gabriel told him who he was: a messenger who stands in the presence of God, sent to bring him good news This is the same angel who appeared to Daniel to explain his visions
Luke 1:21-26 People were waiting to see the smoke Zacharias comes out and cannot speak Goes home after his service is completed Elizabeth becomes pregnant and secludes herself for five months In her sixth month, Gabriel is now sent to Nazareth, about 100 miles away from her, to her relative Mary
Luke 1:27-34 Mary: a virgin, engaged to be married to Joseph, descendant of David Gabriel appears to her, 6 months after he appeared to Elizabeth, and says, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. Then, he said do not be afraid. You will conceive, bear a son, call Him Jesus. God named Him. Mary believed Gabriel, but asked how.

Luke 1:46-56 The Magnificat Mary exalted and rejoiced in God her Savior and called herself a bond-slave She knew all generations would call her blessed: yet she was a pregnant woman out of wedlock in Jewish society . It was all about Jesus, and not about her

Application Luke 1:80 John grew physically and spiritually, until his public appearance to Israel Are WE growing spiritually as we grow old physically? Do WE make as much of a difference in our community as Zacharias and Elizabeth did because we walk so righteously?
