St Clements School Newsletter Winter 2015 It doesn t seem 5 minutes since I was writing this for the end of Summer term! Time has flown by. The Autumn and Winter terms have been very busy with our Primary pupils moving into their fantastic new building. This in turn has created more space for the rest of the pupils in the older parts of the school which has helped. We have also welcomed new members of staff to St Clement s: Susie Lockett, our new Class 3 Teacher, Sue Brown our new Clerical Assistant and Rebecca Abrahams, a new PSA for Class 4. Sadly we have to say goodbye to some pupils as they move on into the next stage of their lives and we wish them and their families the very best. We are also saying goodbye to Kim Dunbar, our Class 2 Teacher. Kim is moving to pastures new in Inverness and we will all miss her commitment and enthusiasm greatly. Finally I would like to extend my thanks for your continued support and hard work. I hope you have an enjoyable holiday and a well deserved rest. Eco News St. Clement s pupils look after the community garden beside the school. We were delighted when Tesco ,through their Community Partnership Venture, offered to help tidy the garden for the Winter. So, on a wet, cold Monday the Gardening Squad weeded, dug, painted, planted and spread bark transforming the area. It is now a tidier, safer and more inviting space for our pupils, the Gaelic nursery and community to use. Thank you Tesco for your hard work and we look forward to continuing this gardening partnership and a big thank you also to Munros Sawmill Ltd for donating the bark for the garden. News From The Primary The primary department pupils have all settled in well to their new home and are enjoying using all of the different learning areas around the building. We have also welcomed a new teacher to Class 3 Mrs Susie Lockett. We all continue to develop our literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing skills throughout all learning experiences. This term we have been learning about electricity in Science including staying safe and using electrical appliances. Our Social Studies topic has been learning about wind and water and we have been learning about how wind affects our lives, taking our learning outdoors where we can. RME has been continuing to develop our ability to make choices, major festivals in our country and most recently, Christmas. We continue to develop our ability to use ICT as part of Technologies and in Expressive Arts we have developed our movement to music skills, seasonal art and beat and rhythm in music. We are looking forward to our Christmas themed learning experiences in the run up to Christmas and our IDL topic about Renewable Energy. More Eco News Invitations! In 2015 we received 331.20 from donations to the Rag Bag bin, which is sited in our car park. This is a fantastic amount and helps to fund our Eco gardening projects. Not only that it helps you to clear your clutter! The Eco Group have also organised a collection for the Highland Food Bank. A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated. Highland Group RDA have extended an open invitation to all their volunteers and riders to visit Broomhill Riding Centre on Sunday 20 December from 10.30am onwards for tea/coffee and cake. Evanton Woods Community Group are holding an Open Day on Saturday 19 December from 11am 3pm. Craft making, food to eat and music. All welcome. THANK YOU VERY MUCH At the end of this term, we would all like to say thank you to all the individuals, groups and organisations who contribute in so many ways towards the learning and achievement that takes place in St. Clement's. Through partnerships with the local and wider community our pupils gain enriching experiences which enhances their learning and builds confidence and success. Thank you for your kindness , resources and your time. Our senior pupils have started working towards their Bronze Award which is in 4 sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills and an Expedition. We have started the award by Volunteering in our community. Our class 6/7 pupils have chosen either to help at Blythswood making crafts or at Evanton Woods where we are planning and building a play area. Class 4 Class 4 and 5, accompanied by some members of Class 7, enjoyed a visit to Novar 2 Wind Farm after half term. Although we had been warned about possible low temperatures it was a jewel of a day. The pupils were suitably impressed by the size of the turbines and views of the locality. We are indebted to RWE Innogy UK Limited for making this visit possible. We have subsequently been busy in class designing and constructing our own windmills. Pupils have had a lot fun testing how much weight their windmills will lift and considering the effect of the strength and direction of the wind. Our improvised hair drier wind couldn t quite match the 160 miles per hour wind which was the highest recorded at Novar! We are also pleased to welcome Moir who is currently in transition to Class 4 and are delighted she is taking part in our Nativity. Class 5 News It is hard to believe how quickly the term has passed! One of our highlights was attending the performance of Joseph at Dingwall Academy this really helped inspire us for our end of term Nativity! We are pleased to welcome Arran and Scott, who are currently making transitions to St Clement s from other schools. We look forward to them learning with us in class 5. The pupils made the classroom colourful this term by producing collages which explain how the water cycle works. Well done everybody, for working hard and taking part in activities! BE HEALTH AWARE! Head Lice are a common problem in school aged children. They can t be prevented, but regular checking ensures early detection and treatment if necessary. Parents and carers should check their children s head once a week during hair washing. You need your usual shampoo, conditioner and a detection comb ask your local pharmacist to recommend a suitable one. Remember you are looking for living moving lice, the only evidence that your child is infected. If you find a living louse, ask your local pharmacist, school nurse, health visitor or GP for advice regarding treatment. Adverse Weather Precautions If you are unsure whether or not the school is open you should access the Highland Council telephone service on 0800 564 2272 and use our PIN number 04 3000. This will be updated by 7.30am. MFR radio will also broadcast lists of school closures. Class 6s Highlights Class 6 have chosen a few of their highlights from this term. Enjoying playing the harp at music Volunteering for the D of E Award at Evanton Woods Celebrating 18th birthdays Investigating an Amaryllis bulb for our Science National- learning about Living Things Class 7 Farewell Class 7 say goodbye to Ciaran Coutinho, our Head Boy, who is leaving St. Clement s after 15 years as a pupil. We will miss Ciaran but wish him all the best for the future. We also want to say a big THANK YOU to Ciaran and his mum who very kindly hosted a goodbye lunch for us. Here s what Ciaran has to say about his time at St Clement s: I have been at St Clement s School for 15 years plus. I have really enjoyed all educational activities within the school and out of the school. My favourite activities at school have been English, Creative Arts and typing on the computer. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at St Clement s. We d love to see you at our Christmas Service, Tuesday 22 December, 2pm, Dingwall Free Church (High Street). Refreshments served afterwards.
