Year One Curriculum Plan To Be The Best That We Can Be Autumn Term Two Year 1 Class Teacher Mrs P Woodhouse Thank you for your continued support Religious Education Our RE topic this half term- Mary Our Mother Mary Our Mother Know that God sent the Angel Gabriel to ask Mary to be the Mother of His Son. The children will learn that God sent the Angel Gabriel with a message to Mary and learn why this is important. They will learn that God asked Mary to be the mother of his son and will have an opportunity to reflect on her response. They will hear about Mary s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth and reflect on the good news. The children will learn about Advent and begin to reflect how we can prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. They will learn that Mary is our mother in heaven and that she is looking after us. How to help at home: Talk to your child about Mary s response to God's request. Year One Curriculum Plan To Be The Best That We Can Be Autumn Term Two English Writing Focus Text (Fiction): Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. In this unit, children will: read an abridged version of a story told using simple predictable language; sequence the text and read/retell the story; explore how and can be used to join sentences; talk about punctuation, including capital letters; tell and write their own story using simple predictable language. Spelling: vowel diagraphs oa , ow ; er and ur ; ai/ay , oi/oy ; ee/oo , ea , ea ; air , igh , ear ; ew and ue . Read Write Inc (Phonics): Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3 sounds Reading: Starting School (Picture) Inference; Our Sense (Picture) Inference; Mary had a Little Lamb (Poetry) Retrieval; Jack and Jill (Poetry) Word Meaning; Snow Bear (Fiction) Inference; Rigby Star individual reading text will be used for differentiation and SEN. How to help at home: Read with your child every night and sign reading record book. Encourage your child to complete their homework each week, which will link with the grammar focus in English lessons. Maths In Maths, this half term, we will be completing our work on, Addition & subtraction within 10 . Reinforcing the concept of one whole and one part (part whole model), partitioning numbers into two or more parts, using addition symbol, subtraction symbol and = sign to create fact families and finding systematic methods for number bonds within 10. Taking away by crossing out, subtract by counting back on a number line, subtracting to find the difference between two numbers, compare addition and subtraction statements (<. >. =) A short unit on Geometry (2D and 3D shapes) will be introduced. The children will learn to name and describe shapes and talk about their properties. We will continue to focus on arithmetic at the beginning of each Maths lesson, using the WR Maths Flashback 4 as a tool to discuss methods and model how to approach the questions. Building on their 2 times table knowledge, children will begin to count in 10s and learn their 10 times tables. How to help at home: Please encourage your child to practice writing their 2 and 10 times table facts and reciting them. Year One Curriculum Plan To Be The Best That We Can Be Autumn Term Two History Science Our History topic for this half term is, My Family History . In this unit, children will explore similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people their grandparents age. The unit focuses on different topics, including homes, toys, shops and schools, timelines and provides opportunities for children to develop their awareness of the past and know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework. Our Science topic for this half term is, Celebrations . This topic uses the theme of celebrations (light, music, food), to explore a number of curriculum areas, including everyday materials, plants and light. The children will continue to explore with their senses, to say which part of the body is associated with each sense. Identifying and naming a variety of everyday materials and name the different parts of a plant. How to help at home: Talk to your child about different celebrations and which food and music are associated with them. Encourage your child to make food with you. How to help at home: Encourage your child to talk to grandparents and ask questions about their childhood. Look at family photos and artefacts from that time period. Music PE This half term, our Music theme is Rhythm In The Way We Walk . In this unit we will focus on a style of music from the Reggae genre. We will listen and appraise, explore pulse, rhythm and pitch, rapping, dancing, singing and accompanying the songs with musical instruments. Real PE: Real Gym This half term we will continue developing our gymnastic skills. In this unit, the children will learn, develop and apply flight and rotation on the floor and apparatus through focused skill development, thematic warm-ups and games. How to help at home: Listen to Reggae music with your child. Discuss the origins of Reggae music in Jamaica in the 1960s and how its popularity spread to the rest of the world. Year One Curriculum Plan To Be The Best That We Can Be Autumn Term Two Books to Share at Home D&T This term in Design and Technology, our topic is Preparing Fruits and vegetables . In this unit of work we will learn about, where food comes from and food preparation. Children will have opportunities to and preparing fruits and vegetables (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS1). The children will carry out investigations that includes, using their sense to explore, taste, smell, naming and classifying, different fruits and vegetables. Children will consider characteristics of fruits and vegetables suitable to create fruits salad structures. How to help at home: Talk to your child about different fruits and vegetables. Where are they grown? How do they grow. Why is it important to include them in our daily meals? How to help at home: Read with your child every night and sign their reading record book. Encourage your child to complete a book review or a sequencing activity each week. Computing In Computing this half term, our focus will be on, using Microsoft Word and other programs to process and format text & images . In this unit, the children will use technology to collect information, including photos, videos and sound. They will use software with support, to create, store and edit digital content, save information in a specific place and retrieve it again. PHSE/RSE This half term our PSHE topic is Religious Understanding: Created to Love Others God Loves You . Children will explore their relationships with others, family, friendships and the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships. Building on the understanding that we have been created out of love and for love How to help at home: Talk to your children about God s love for us, and that nothing we can do will stop Him from loving us. How to help at home: Give children opportunities to practice typing on the computer (e.g. shopping list or address).
