Common Canadian Values
Directness, Openness, Honesty

In Canada, saying what we really think is highly valued. But
being polite is also important. We have to learn how to be honest
yet kind in how we say it.

Coworkers are equally valued, regardless of age, gender, religion,
or amount of time working for the company. Bosses and managers
may have a higher position than employees, but they are not seen
as superior to the employees.

Employees are given their tasks to do but are not necessarily told
exactly how to do them. They are expected to figure it out, work as
a team, and work with an amount of independence. Many
Canadian bosses do not “micromanage” employees. If an employee
finishes their task, they are expected to find something additional
to do. This is calling taking initiative.

Many companies in Canada are open to ideas that improve their
business. There is not as much focus on the past and tradition
here; new ideas are often welcomed from employees.

Time
Arriving on time, managing your workload and your working
hours, and maximizing how much work you do per hour are very
important in Canada. In some countries, time is flexible. Not in
Canada. Time is very fixed and schedules and being punctual are
very, very important here!

In Canada, we do not discuss our salaries with our co-
workers. Or how much we paid for an item we have at work.
Or our religion, our ages, or our sizes!

Work
Many Canadians define themselves by their job. What you do is
central to who you are. It is one of the first questions we ask
someone when we meet them the first time.

Common Canadian Values
Doing and Achieving
In Canada, we place a high value on doing things, on being busy
and working hard. Some cultures focus on relationships more
than being productive. In Canada, relationships between
companies or business partners matter but, because time is so
important, we value efficiency in getting things done the most.

Self-improvement
In general and at work, Canadians like to try to improve
themselves. Continuing to learn is encouraged and sometimes
paid for by the company someone works for!

Materialism
Buying things tends to be important to Canadians. A big house, a
few cars, nice clothes, and vacations are common expenses. This
also creates a debt culture in Canada.

Being Informal
There are not many strict traditions or ways to interact with
people in Canada. Most companies, if they do not provide
uniforms, keep a business casual dress code. Many people call
their coworkers and managers by their first names. Formal titles
are not often used.
