Learning objectives To describe the status of women in the pre-Islamic period To recognize the rights that Islam gave to women To demonstrate the ways in which women can play an active role in society
Women in the Pre-Islamic Period In the pre-Islamic period women were considered inferior and baby daughters were buried alive because it was considered shameful for the family Men could marry as many women as they liked At times women were forced to marry somone against their will When a man died, his wives were inherited by his sons Women were not allowed any part in the inheritance
Allah tells us in the Holy Quran This period before Islam is known as the period of jahiliyyah (The era of ignorance)
Rights of Women in Islam Rasulullah(s) was sent in this world to guide the people Rasulullah(s) was sent in this world to guide the people and to stop all these bad practices against women and to stop all these bad practices against women Islam gave women the right to choose a husband, and men were limited to marrying only 4 women (eg. marriage of Bibi Fatima) Islam gave women the right of inheritance
ContdRights of Women in Islam Islam put a stop to burying girls alive. It teaches us that men and women are equal in the eyes of Allah. They have been created with some differences, and hence have been assigned different duties Islam always considered women very special. For example Quran talks very highly about the Mothers of Prophet Musa(a) and Prophet Isa(a)
How can women play an active role in society? Women can play a role in the society in 3 different ways: 1. Personal: In the personal capacity, women can play an active role my taking care of her own spiritual and physical perfection. During the time of Rasulullah(s), women used to contribute in wars by providing the men with food and treating their wounds 2. Family: A woman may choose to take care of the physical needs of the her family members. She can also play an important role in the spiritual upbringing of the children under her care 3. Society: A woman can play a fundamental role in creating a better community and society. Allah commands both men and women to perform amr bil-ma ruf & nahy an al-munkar
Examples of some great women in Islam Sayyidah Khadijah She was a businesswoman and traded with people from other lands. She was the wealthiest trader in Arabia, however after marrying Rasulullah(s) she gave away all her wealth in the cause of Islam Sayyidah Fatima She is the only child of our Holy Prophet(s). In addition to taking care of her family, she was a source of guidance for women about Islam Sayyidah Zainab The daughter of Lady Fatima, she took care of all the women and children after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain(a). She actively spoke out against Yazid and made sure people knew about the tragedy of Kerbala. Sayyidah Maryam She was the mother of Prophet Isa(a). She used to receive fruits from Heaven.
In conclusion: - Women were treated very badly and were considered inferior during the time of jahiliyyah - Islam stopped all the bad practices against women and gave them their due rights - Islam gave women right to choose a husband & right of inheritance - Islam stopped burying girls alive - Women can play an active role in the society
