What is a variable?
Variables are elements that can be altered in an experiment, such as temperature, time, concentration, volume, and particle size. They play a crucial role in scientific investigations. Understanding variables helps in conducting meaningful experiments and drawing valid conclusions.

1. What is a variable? 2. Name two variables.
Variables A variable is something that can be changed in an experiment. For example: - Temperature - Time - Concentration - Volume - Particle Size
Success Criteria WHAT CAN I DO? Red Amber Green State what the terms solute, solvent and solution mean. Successfully carry out an experiment into the solubility of substances. Write a valid conclusion.
Solutions If a material dissolves it is soluble. If a material doesn t dissolve, it is insoluble. soluble insoluble
Solutions Sugar dissolves, therefore sugar is soluble!
Solutions The solid that dissolves is called the solute The liquid that the solid dissolves in is called the solvent The mixture of the solute and solvent is called a solution Image result for cartoon beaker with blue liquid solution solvent solute
Solutions Solute + Solvent = Solution (solid) (liquid) (solid + liquid)
What happens when a solid dissolves?
Definitions! - Solubility Solute Solvent Solution - Soluble Insoluble - - - A solid that is dissolved in a liquid. A liquid in which a solid is dissolved. A mixture of a solute and solvent. A substance that will dissolve. A substance that will not dissolve. -

Experiment Aim: To find out the solubility of certain compounds in water. Method: 1. Collect 4 test tubes. 2. Half fill each test tube with water 3. Add a spatula of the first solid to the first test tube. 4. Decide if it is soluble or insoluble. 5. Record in the table. 6. Repeat for the other solids.
Experiment Results: Compound name Cloudy/ Clear Soluble/ Insoluble Salt Sugar Cetyl alcohol Salicylic acid
Saturation: Saturation is the point at which a solute is no longer soluble in a solvent (It will appear as a precipitate (solid) in the solution). Saturated
