The Campus Climate Survey Campus Climate Surveys are conducted at Universities to gauge student experiences and relationships on a specific topic With a focus on sexual misconduct, this survey was conducted at Wake Forest University during the Spring 2022 semester, and included questions about consent, discrimination, interpersonal violence, and more The purpose of this survey was to collect information about the prevalence of sexual assault and other sexual misconduct, students awareness and use of institutional resources, and perceptions of safety on campus The goal was to reach 30 percent of the student body (around 1600 responses)
The Campus Climate Survey (Cont.) The survey took around 20 minutes to complete and was confidential, allowing students to be open about their Wake Forest experience without tying their identity to their responses Wake Forest Contracted with the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) an outside vendor, out of the University of Chicago NORC has created a report and a summary of the results. It is SAPSA s role now to use this data to create a better campus climate where students feel supported and receive the necessary help they deserve
Formation of SAPSA In October 2021 the Sexual Assault Prevention, Support, and Accountability Committee (SAPSA) was formed as an Executive Advisory Committee to the Student Body President, to focus on issues pertaining to sexual assault and misconduct and to advise on the rollout of the Campus Climate Survery on Sexual Misconduct While formally a part of the Student Government this committee has members from all across campus (both inside and outside of SG)
CHARGE To measure the climate of the Wake Forest campus related to issues surrounding sexual assault and violence through the implementation of a university-wide sexual assault campus climate survey To utilize this survey to advise on action planning and goal creation around issues presented in the survey To provide feedback on expanded prevention strategy recommendations To frame goals and plans around forming an environment in which all members of the community have the support of the university and their peers to challenge the norms that allow for sexual assault and violence to occur on college campuses To serve as a formal bridge between students and university leadership working towards a common goal
GOALS Leveraging platforms to promote sexual assault survey to garner a minimum of a 30% response rate to maximize the reliability of data collected Utilizing the survey response data to provide feedback and insight on proposed campus initiatives and policies aimed at combating sexual assault and violence at Wake Forest Serving as leaders within various campus communities to promote prosocial behaviors, safe social practices, and strengthening bystander practices Contributing to the creation of an intentional environment in which survivors of sexual assault and violence feel supported and uplifted by their community members and campus leaders
OUTCOMES Campus Climate Survey garnered a 38% response rate - allowing for more informed decision making on future strategies aimed at prevention and support WFU has hired an Interpersonal Violence Prevention Coordinator Please see WFU email from 11/7 for University s recent update: Facilitated discussion to be held Monday 11/14 Executive summary will be available following facilitated discussions University will host targeted follow-up sessions with student organizations to continue conversation with students Rooted in the data, we will continue to formulate concrete actions aimed at further improving our campus climate
