Overview Open Source Software Promise and Challenges 2020 Digital Library Training What is VuFind? What problems does it solve? What are its key features? How can I implement it? Where can I learn more about it?
Open Source: Promise and Challenges Many open source applications exist to support libraries Making the most of these applications requires specialized knowledge Interoperation between these systems is often underdocumented We can work together to share knowledge and improve the systems that we rely upon
2020 Digital Library Training Goals: Create new open source experts within the library field, capable of sharing knowledge with others Produce training materials that can be reused in the future Allow testing and improvement of existing documentation Covered Linux, Koha, DSpace, SubjectsPlus, WordPress and VuFind VuFind serves as the glue connecting all of the other systems
What is VuFind? A flexible search engine & discovery interface for all your content and end user functionality Open Source Highly Configurable Highly Customizable Highly Extensible Community Supported
Library Problems Information is distributed across multiple systems, reducing findability Some systems have outdated, inconsistent, or confusing user interfaces Replacing software systems can disrupt the experience of end users by causing unnecessary/unexpected change Librarians want fine-grained control over search behavior and result displays
VuFinds Solutions Provide a single user-friendly interface on top of multiple data sources Reduces silo problem Eliminates inconsistency Insulates against change Provide robust configuration/customization support Allows libraries to quickly respond to local needs

Supported Content and Systems Built using PHP, Laminas components, and Apache Solr. Can import many types of record, including MARC and common flavors of XML. Can be used to bring together content from many types of systems: Integrated Library Systems (with driver support) Content Management Systems (via OAI-PMH) Web-based Systems (through sitemap.xml crawling) Web-scale Discovery Services (using APIs)
