Before we start VERB: Action word NOUN: Person, place, or thing Claw, Flap, Groom, Share, Shelter Calf, Claw, Couple, Cushion, Flap, Groom, Share, Shelter, Yard, Zero Animals use their nails to claw at things. The birds flapped their wings. The cats are grooming themselves. The roof of your home shelters you.

  4. Calf 1 NOUN A muscle on the leg of the human body in between the knee and foot Runners have strong calf muscles. NOUN A baby cow The calf needs to be protected by its mother. *Both calf muscles = calves Two baby cows are calves.

  5. Claw 2 NOUN The sharp curved nail on the toe of a bird or animal. The eagle uses its claws to catch food. NOUN The part of a crab or lobster used for gripping. The lobster has two big claws. VERB To scratch or dig with sharp nails. Cats like to claw* at furniture. The to can help signify a verb. SYNONYM: TALON

  6. Couple 3 NOUN Two things of the same kind. Pick up a couple of apples at the store. NOUN Two people in a relationship. The couple likes to take walks together. All the couples are dancing.

  7. Cushion 4 NOUN A pillow or a pad with a soft filling. The couch has a couple* of cushions. Other things that have a cushion: bed, chair, stool

  8. Flap 5 NOUN A piece of something thin, attached only on one side, that covers an opening or hangs down from something. Use the flap to open the envelope. VERB To move up or down. Birds flap their wings to fly. Paper, pockets

  9. Groom 6 NOUN A person who takes care of horses. The groom brushes and walks the horse every day. NOUN A man who is getting married. The groom is ready and excited for his wedding. VERB Take care of, clean, or make neat. Monkeys help groom one another. To tend, prepare, freshen, nurture

  10. Share 7 NOUN A part of a larger amount that is divided among a number of people. Your share of the money. Your share of the food. VERB To use or enjoy with others. Kids like to share toys with their friends. Share your seat on the bus when it s crowded. Portion, take, ration

  11. Shelter 8 NOUN Something that covers or protects. Bears use caves as a shelter during the winter. Tents provide shelter when we go camping. VERB To provide protection or safety My jacket shelters me from the cold. The umbrella shelters us from the rain. Protect, shield, conceal Cover, home, lodge

  12. Yard 9 NOUN Outside land around building/structure The fence goes around our yard. There are flowers in the yard. NOUN A unit of measurement. One yard equals three feet. American football fields are 120 yards.

  14. READING Comprehension

  15. How did Bailey know there were zero cats at Sugar Wood Farm? 1 Bailey counted the number of cats he saw. Because there weren t any cats, Bailey counted zero cats I counted the cats that lived there. The number I came up with was zero.

  16. How do you know that Ken didnt want to share his home with Bailey? 2 Whenever Bailey would try to go inside, Ken would tell Sandra not to let him in. But Ken always said, Don t let him in. Don t let him in. And they shut the door in my face.

  17. Why do you think Bailey rubbed against Sandra s calf and not Ken s? 3 Because Ken told Sandra to close the door on Bailey, Ken did not seem to like Bailey. I knew I only had a couple of seconds to make my move. So I would rub against Sandra s calf, purring loudly and looking up at her face.

  18. Why didnt Bailey look for shelter when it started to rain and then snow? 4 Bailey thought Sandra and Ken would feel sorry for him I could have taken shelter in their woodshed. But I wanted to be right there on the doorstep when they came home. Before long, the rain turned to snow. This was even better. I was sure that no one would turn a cat away on such a night.

  19. What happened to Bailey a couple of days after he was let into the house? 5 Ken and Sandra talked to Bailey s old owners about keeping him Sandra talked to my old owners about me.

  20. How do you know that Bailey can come in and go out to the yard easily? 6 There is a cat door for Bailey They also made a cat door for me with a little flap. I just push it open with my nose and it closes behind me.

  21. Why didnt Bailey need to have Sandra groom him? 7 Bailey likes to groom himself. He thinks he does a better job than Sandra. Sandra likes to groom me. I think I do it better myself, but it gives her a lot of pleasure.

  22. How often do you think Bailey sleeps on the cushion Sandra made for him? Explain your answer 8 Bailey probably uses the cushion a lot because he says cats spend a lot of time sleeping Cats spend a lot of time sleeping, so Sandra made a soft cushion for me to use.

  23. Do you think Bailey likes having the cat door with the flap? Explain your answer 9 Yes because it is easy to use and he is able to go outside whenever he wants I just push it open with my nose and it closes behind me.

  24. What are some ways Bailey might use his claws? 10 Bailey might use his claws to scratch, to climb trees, or to hunt mice I try not to sharpen my claws on their furniture.
