  2. 2 Update to 23rd ASWGC 11th Steering Committee Meeting of AARNET Date: 22-23 March 2016 Venue: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Chair Dr Leong Hon Keong, AARNET Chairman AMSs: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Participants Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Asian Vegetable Research & Development Centre (AVRDC) The World Vegetable Center

  3. 3 Initiatives under AARNET For ASWGC s information No. 1 Initiative Project on Regional Cooperation to Enhance Vegetable Research and Development in ASEAN Region AVRDC could provide a service to receive seeds for duplicate storage and characterisation and advice on seed multiplication schemes for open pollinated varieties. 2 Project on Extension of Storage Life and Maintenance of Quality of Selected Vegetables in ASEAN As at May 2016, proposal by Malaysia is at last stage of approval from Japan Agriculture International Fund pending Malaysia s review and acknowledgement on revised proposal budget. Project on Vegetables Trials on Panels of Promising Vegetables Varieties from AVRDC AMSs would continue to conduct trials on promising lines. AARNET Sec will circulate a template to collate the results and reports of variety trials of AMSs. 3

  4. 4 Initiatives under AARNET For ASWGC s information No. Initiative 4 SEAVEG 2016 SEAVEG 2016 will be held in Malaysia from 6-8 September 2016, hosted by MARDI with support from AVRDC. The Chairman asked AMS to support the event by sending participants and submitting abstracts. 5 Cucurbit Breeding Programme AVRDC is working closely with Kasetsart University, Thailand in this programme. Success in breeding of multiple virus resistance in pumpkin lines. A consortium of seed companies have pledged their support to this programme and to facilitate further development and dissemination of elite materials. 6 Expert Consultation on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Vegetables in Southeast Asia and subsequent Vegetable Germplasm Training Course for ASEAN Countries Vegetable germplasm training and information sharing were identified as areas of improvement. AVRDC organised a Vegetable Germplasm Training course in 2015 which focus on screening of germplsm for climate tolerant characteristics.
