Digging Wells for the Next Generation: Core Values in the Search Fund Community If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Sir Isaac Newton 1
Core Values Help Drive Success in Core Search In the Spring of 2023, we set out to identify and document the core values of the search fund community and explore their impact. With the help of social scientists, we conducted extensive research to include interviews with early CEOs, investors, and mentors, and an AI-powered qualitative survey. Synthesizing the input from over 300 searchers, CEOs, and investors, we identified six core values that make up our culture and that are embraced with surprising consistency across our community. These values have broad impact, to include shaping how we lead, the culture of operating companies, and the outcomes we achieve. Despite any formal leadership or culture-building efforts to date, these values have been promulgated over three decades, making up the unique alchemy that enables a first-time CEO to be successful across a variety of dimensions. The six core values are outlined on the following page. Our hope is that their articulation will lend to their staying power and strength. We welcome dialogue, feedback, and continued conversation around this important topic. -With gratitude, Sara, Jose, and Gerald 2
