Explore the use of metals in society, focusing on gold's suitability for jewellery due to its unreactive nature, ability to be polished and shaped. Discover terms like lustre, malleable, ductile, and thermal conductivity, essential for understanding metal properties. Engage in activities to define these terms and learn how metals are utilized in various applications.

  1. Starter Activity Gold has been used for centuries for jewellery and decoration. Using your knowledge of the properties of gold, suggest why this is the case. Are there any other metals that would be suitable for jewellery for similar reasons?

  2. Properties and uses of metals

  3. Learning intention Today we are learning about the properties of metals and how they can be used in everyday life.

  4. Success Criteria I can define the terms: Malleable Ductile Thermal conduction Electrical conduction Density I can explain how metals are used in society for their unique properties.

  5. Properties of metals As mentioned in the starter activity, gold is unreactive so can be used for jewellery. However, that isn t the only reason gold is used. What else makes gold suitable for jewellery? Gold can be polished to make it shiny. Gold can be shaped into whatever shape is desired. Let s learn some technical terms that apply to metals.

  6. Task 1 For the following properties, copy and fill in the table as you learn new information. Property Definition

  7. Properties of metals Lustre Lustre means that something reflects a lot of light and appears to shine.

  8. Properties of metals Malleable Something that is malleable can be hammered or pressed into different shapes.

  9. Properties of metals Ductile Something that is ductile can be stretched into long, thin wires. See how a blacksmith uses malleability and ductility: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k1foQTQoTQ

  10. Properties of metals Thermal Conductivity Think-Pair-Share Why does this pan have a plastic handle? Metals conduct heat well, so if the entire pan was metal then you could easily burn your hand! Plastic is an insulator and doesn t conduct heat well.

  11. Properties of metals Electrical Conductivity Metals conduct electricity well, meaning electricity will readily pass through them.

  12. Density Density is the mass of an object divided by its volume. Most metals tend to have a high density, meaning they have a large mass in a small volume.

  13. Task Metal Use Properties Lead Your task for today is to use a netbook or a textbook to do a bit of research. Copper Titanium For the following metals, research what they are used for and what properties those metals have that make them ideal for that use. Aluminium Radium Gold Chromium

  14. What have you learned? 1. What does the term malleable mean? 2. Explain why copper is ideal for use in expensive cooking pans. 3. A fisherman needs to catch fish to feed his family, but all the fish are at the very bottom of his local loch. Suggest how he could use metals to help him get his bait to the bottom of the loch.
