Understanding the Importance of a Smokefree Trust Policy
A Smokefree Trust prohibits smoking on-site and provides evidence-based treatment for tobacco dependence. This policy is crucial due to the health risks associated with smoking, including premature death, increased hospital admissions, and high healthcare costs. As a healthcare organization, promoting a smoke-free environment is essential for protecting individuals and fulfilling our duty of care. Interested staff can learn more about the Trust's Smokefree policy and their roles and responsibilities within it.

TRUST INDUCTION SMOKEFREE TRAINING AIMS Each member of staff will have a clear understanding of the Trust Smokefree policy; and their roles & responsibilities within it OBJECTIVES What does SmokefreeTrust mean? Why does the Trust operate a Smokefree policy? What does working for a Smokefree organisation mean for me? How can I find out more?
What does Smokefree Trust mean? Definition A Smokefree Trust is one that prohibits smoking anywhere on-site, in addition to offering evidence-based treatment for tobacco dependence for all who smoke, as core to its everyday business.
Why does the Trust operate a Smokefree policy? Smoking rates have fallen significantly but smoking still accounts for more years of life lost than any other modifiable risk factor Smokers see their GP over a third more often than non-smokers, and smoking is linked to nearly half a million hospital admissions each year https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/towards-a-smoke-free-generation-tobacco-control-plan-for-england One in four patients in hospital beds are smokers Smoking results in an annual cost to NHS across England of 2.5bn
.more reasons: Smoking results in: The premature death of about a half of all life-long smokers Around 100,000 deaths in the UK annually Reduced life expectancy of an average of 10 years, compared to non- smokers Reduced life expectancy of an average 20 years for smokers who have a serious mental health condition Around 80% of all deaths from lung cancer; the cause of 80% all deaths from bronchitis and emphysema and 14% of all deaths from heart disease
more reasons As a healthcare organisation we have a duty of care to protect all who use or visit our premises, or who work for us The benefits of promoting smoke-free as the norm in all healthcare premises cannot be underestimated Evidence demonstrates that there is no safe level of exposure to smoking thus smoking limits that right to life
Your roles & responsibilities The Smokefree policy is everyone s business This means both complying and enforcing the policy This does not have to be confrontational (link to CURE video)
Smoking is an addiction and therefore classified as a disease As such, everyone who smokes and is effected by the Smokefree policy will be offered help and support If you are a member of staff who smokes, you have a responsibility: Not to smoke during you working time Not to smoke while recognisable through uniform, I.D. or association with the Trust To be courteous and respectful to the local community To dispose of cigarette waste responsibly
E-cigarettes E-cigarettes deliver nicotine via vapour rather than smoke - it is the smoke produced when setting light to tobacco which makes smoking so harmful. E-cigarette use is often known as vaping and e-cigarette users are known as vapers . Switching completely from smoking to vaping should be positively encouraged for those smokers who feel unable to quit nicotine abruptly. Anyone succeeding in switching should be supported and congratulated. The risks associated with breathing in other people s vape are negligible whereas the harm associated with second-hand smoking are widely documented.
