SOLs, or Standards of Learning tests, are standardized assessments in Virginia to measure student mastery of grade-level content. These tests are essential for graduation requirements, school effectiveness evaluation, and meeting both federal and state testing mandates. Students are tested on various subjects such as reading, mathematics, science, and writing, with specific grade levels having designated tests. The tests are untimed and adaptive, providing a customized experience based on student responses. Testing at Lees Corner will be conducted in May, with specific details on test formats and schedules. Parents can find comprehensive information and resources to help their children succeed in these assessments.

  1. Understanding SOLs: Information for Parents Lees Corner Spring 2022

  2. What are SOLs? Standards of Learning tests are standardized tests used across the state of Virginia to measure students mastery of grade level content and standards. In some middle school classes and many high school classes, passing SOL scores are needed in order for students to receive credits towards a diploma. Overall scores are used to measure the progress and effectiveness of schools.

  3. Why are students tested? SOL tests are used to fulfill: Federal requirements for annual testing in reading, mathematics, and science State requirements for testing in writing and social studies Graduation requirements for verified credit to earn a standard or advanced studies diploma

  4. What tests are given? Grade 3 = Reading & Math Grade 4 = Reading & Math Grade 5 = Reading, Math, and Science Grade 6 = Reading & Math

  5. How long are the tests? o At the elementary level, each test has about 35 questions. o The tests are untimed so students can have as much time as needed. o Most students finish by lunch. Some students do take most of the day. o 3rdgraders will test over 2 days.

  6. When are the tests? o All testing at Lees Corner will be done in May. Testing in FCPS must be completed by Friday, May 27th. o 3rdand 4thgraders will test on the same days. o 5thand 6thgraders will test on the same days. o The schedule is here.

  7. What is the format of the tests? Reading and Math tests are Computer Adaptive Tests (CAT). Computer adaptive testing (CAT) is an assessment model that provides a customized test experience for each student. Each CAT assessment begins with a question of moderate difficulty. A correct response leads to a more difficult question, while an incorrect response leads to a less difficult question. Because question difficulty is tailored to each student's responses, CAT assessments can measure a student's performance with fewer total questions than are needed with a traditional assessment. All students complete the same number of questions for the overall test.

  8. What is the format of the tests? Students cannot skip questions when taking a CAT assessment. They must answer a question before moving to the next question. Students are unable to return to earlier questions to review or make changes. A group of questions may be connected to a reading passage. Students may navigate back and forth among questions tied to each passage. Once students move to the next passage, they can no longer return to questions from the earlier passage set.

  9. What is the format of the tests? Multiple Choice Drag and Drop/Fill in the Blank Multiple Select

  10. How are the tests scored? 600 is a perfect score. Pass Advanced Students who score between 375 and 399 qualify for a retake. 500-600 Parents will be notified via email if their child qualifies for a retake. Pass Proficient When students retake a test, the highest score is kept and the lower score is thrown out. 400-499 Fail Students who retake a test receive remediation BEFORE retaking the test. 0-399 Parent Permission to Retest Form, Spring 2022 SOL Tests - LCES

  11. When do parents get the scores? Final score reports will be published in SIS ParentVUE after all division data are authorized, no later than August. Students and parents/guardians will also be able to view overall SOL test scores in ParentVUE and StudentVUE Test History.
