Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Matthew 9:35-38 NIV
1) What aroused the compassion of Jesus 2) How did Jesus express His compassion 3) What is our response
Three specific things that aroused the compassion of Christ
1) Jesus' heart swelled with compassion when he saw sickness
2) Jesus' heart swelled with compassion when he saw death
The birth of Jesus was intended to put an end to the death of man
3) Jesus' heart swelled with compassion when he saw hunger
The passion of Christ flowed from the compassion of Christ
Are we experiencing this compassion?
Jesus taught that a lack of concern for the poor is not a minor lapse, but reveals that something is seriously wrong with one s spiritual compass, the heart." Tim Keller
When we ignore the poor, we show that we have not yet understood our own poverty
Christ-centered ----- Compassionate Self-centered ----Indifferent
We can never understand the compassion of God unless we understand the holiness of God
1) For Jesus, compassion began as a powerful emotion
"The word that best summarizes Christ Jesus is no doubt the word compassion. It is the emotion most frequently attributed to Him." B B Warfield
2) The emotion of compassion mobilised Jesus into action
3) In His compassion, Jesus mobilises us into action
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Matthew 9:35-38 NIV
The Christmas story doesn't end with Christ. God expresses His compassion to humanity by also mobilizing us to express His compassion.
HOW DID JESUS EXPRESS HIS COMPASSION 1) For Jesus, compassion began as a powerful emotion 2) The emotion of compassion mobilised Jesus into action 3) In His compassion, Jesus mobilises us into action
SERMON GOALS 1) Allow the Gospel to arouse the compassions of our hearts towards the poor and oppressed 2) Encourage us to invest our professional, entrepreneurial and artistic capabilities to serve the poor and oppressed
