One that serves as a pattern to be imitated or not to be imitated (Merriam-Webster) In Biblical terms, the Greek word is hupogrammos. It is a contraction meaning to write under. It is a learning tool. Also, hupodeigma, a model, proposed for imitation. Example

When we see the example of Jesus suffering, it should cause us to love him more for what he was willing to undertake for us. When we understand the example of Jesus service, it should cause us to love his willingness to serve each of us, and strengthen us to do the same. Loving Jesus more as our example
