The International Civil Servants Mutual Association of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Specialized Agencies is placed under the patronage of the Director- General of the United Nations Office at Geneva; The objective of ICSMA is the promotion of mutual assistance among staff members working for organizations of the United Nations Common System whose headquarters are, in principle, in Geneva; ICSMA is comprised of two entities, La Mutuelle (loans-deposits-reduced fares for public transportation) and GPAFI (Provident and Insurance Group of International Officials); The object of GPAFI is to negotiate with insurance companies group insurance schemes in order to provide its members with specially tailored insurance coverage with top-of-the-range services and benefits at the best market conditions.
As people age, they become more susceptible to disease and disability; An accident can happen to anyone at anytime; In 2018, Swiss healthcare costs of 12.20% of GDP are the world s second highest after the United States where healthcare consumes 16.90 of GDP (OECD 26.05.2020): Medical expenses are not fully refunded by your basic insurance. Covid-19 reminds us that we are all vulnerable.

Membership is open to all staff of a member organization, stationed in Geneva, plus all internationally recruited staff of member organizations. Staff members from UNEP and UNICEF are eligible only if duty stationed in Geneva; Membership becomes active when you or the members of your family subscribe to an insurance provided by GPAFI; The age limit for applying is 65 (by the month of the anniversary at the latest) and the staff member must be active; A membership fee of CHF 10 must be paid.

A permanent discount of 10% for immediate membership is granted: to a staff member who joins the same date as his/her affiliation to UNSMIS, as well as family members if they join on the same date (provided that the application for admission to UNIQA be made within two months of the date of admission to UNSMIS); to the new spouse of the staff member if he/she joins on the date of the marriage; to the newborn child affiliated on his/her date of birth. A 50% discount is granted on the premium of the 3rd and subsequent insured child. The 50% and the 10% discounts may not be claimed at the same time.
Affiliation: 1. An affiliation is possible the 1st of each month for all or part of the family members; 2. The age limit for applying is 65 (by the month of the anniversary at the latest) and the staff member must be active; 3. Affiliation forms, including a health questionnaire, has to be filled by each person to be insured; 4. The insurance company, UNIQA, has the right to refuse an affiliation or can issue a reservation for a pre-existing medical condition (max. 5 years); 5. Waiting periods for sterility treatments (24 months), maternity and childbirth (12 months), psychological and psychiatric treatments (12 months).

The complementary health insurance is provided in a PREMIUM version that includes medical, travel and security assistance, in addition to the coverage of health expenses. The assistance coverage contains 4 components: 1. Emergency medical assistance during a stay abroad; 2. Unlimited expenses for inpatient or outpatient emergency treatment abroad; 3. Crisis assistance; 4. The assistance coverage relieves you of all administrative and financial formalities facing a medical emergency.
Emergency medical assistance during a stay abroad: 24/7 worldwide medical advice; Network access to medical providers; Sending out medication not available locally; Sending out a doctor; Medical transportation to a hospital locally; Medical evacuation; Medical repatriation.
Unlimited expenses for inpatient or outpatient emergency treatment abroad: Sending confirmation of commitment to cover costs to the hospital where the patient was transported, 24/7 all around the world; Direct payment of the expenses to the hospital or to the healthcare provider on-site; Transmission of bills to UNSMIS for the benefits of the basic insurance; Direct settlement of the benefits of the complementary health insurance.
Crisis assistance: Fees for trip cancellation / modification / interruption in case of political event, attack, epidemiologic risk or natural disaster; Telephone assistance 24/7 and travellers advice sites; Secure online registration of trips; Proactive monitoring of trips; Keeping safe and emergency evacuation assistance; Search and rescue in natural disaster; Arbitrary arrest / kidnapping.

The accident insurance covers only non-professional accidents such as: Sport accidents (mountain-climbing, caving, parachuting, gliding, flying, paragliding, rock-climbing, scuba-diving, rafting, canyoning, boxing, martial arts, motorized sports and competitive sports, ) for which no benefit are paid by UNSMIS; Domestic accidents (fall, burn, cut, poising, ); Traffic accidents caused by a third party (in case of problem to secure compensation from third part). and provides three types of benefits independent of each other: Unlimited medical expenses (outpatient treatments as well as hospitalization in a private room) during 5 years after an accident; Capital in case of death following an accident; Capital in case of disability following an accident (converted into whole life pension if the accident occurs after the age of 65).
The accident insurance can be claimed in the following cases: Complementary to your basic insurance (UNSMIS) in case of accident; If the accident is not covered by your basic insurance; If a third party is held responsible for the accident.

GPAFI provides an insurance against the loss of salary in case of prolonged sick leave due to any non-professional accident or illness; This insurance is particularly important for international civil servants whose entitlement to full pay is not guaranteed in the event of a temporary incapacity to work; As per Staff Rules / Rule 6.2 / Sick leave: A staff member who holds a continuing appointment or a fixed-term appointment for three years or who has completed three years or more of continuous service shall be granted sick leave of up to 9 months on full salary and 9 months on half salary in any period of 4 consecutive years. A staff member who holds a fixed-term appointment and who has completed less than three years of continuous service shall be granted sick leave of up to 3 months on full salary and 3 months on half salary in any period of 12 consecutive months.
The insurance against the loss of salary pays to the staff member 50% of his/her salary during the sick leave on half salary, up to a maximum of 720 days (24 months) in any period of four consecutive years or until the staff member receives a pension.
