Summer Programs: Overview All programs run between June 25 through August 16 o Flexible dates within that timeframe 100 students from the class of 2027 will be selected for this opportunity At least 160 hours for a stipend of $2400 ($15 per hour) o Might be extended if faculty has additional funding Could work with Worcester or Baystate faculty any faculty with UMASS Chan affiliation All students participate in a small group session during the summer o Interact with peers and faculty to discuss your work o OUME will schedule this meeting All students participate in the August/September poster session Independent and concentrated experience which is not a substitute to (or could obtain credit for) your pathway work o Could be aligned with your individual Pathways o Discuss with your pathway leader and summer program director 2
Summer Programs: Project Identification Two methods for identifying a project o Review faculty project proposals (OUME website around Jan 12), contact faculty members directly o Reach out to faculty individually to initiate collaboration (if faculty did not submit a proposal) In both cases, the student confirms with faculty and then fills out an application (deadline to submit is by end of business, Feb 29, 2024) 3
Summer Research Program Work with faculty on research projects Opportunities can cover a complete spectrum of research including - Basic Science - Translational Projects - Clinical Research - Population Health 4 Pranoti Mandrekar and Deepika Devuni
Summer Curriculum Development Program Work with faculty and OUME on curriculum development projects Topics could include broad range of curriculum-related projects including Program assessment Curriculum module development Simulation/POCUS Faculty development tools Innovations in VISTA student-centered learning (e.g., PBL), WIN week, etc. 5 Manas Das
Summer Community Health Program Work with faculty and community partners to achieve community health goals Apply for an existing project or meet with Dr. Haley to propose your own Attend meetings for orientation and peer review of poster drafts Many community partners are busy meeting winter and holiday needs. The Community Wish List will be updated, and placements facilitated in January and February. Reach out to Dr. Haley anytime to discuss ideas and plans. 6 Heather-Lyn Haley
Summer Global Health Program Participate in a summer immersion experience between Y1 and Y2 Students who are interested in international travel for a minimum of 4 weeks during the summer should complete the application and include information regarding faculty mentor, host site, and objectives. Travel may be related to Pathways PLP work but is not required. Students should have an identified UMMS faculty mentor for the experience and must meet criteria of engaging in the experience at the host site for at least 40 hrs./week x 4 weeks. Students should reach out to Dr. Deb and Pawel Chojnowski regarding additional paperwork that should be completed for travel approval. STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THIS EXPERIENCE SHOULD START THEIR APPLICATION ASAP (AND NOT WAIT FOR THE DEADLINE) THE PAPERWORK NEEDS CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO COMPLETE 7 Anindita Deb
