Dual Enrollment vs. Early College Dual Enrollment Typically uses traditional metrics such as GPA to identify students. Typically enrolled in coursework with college students but might include dedicated dual enrollment classes. Student enrolls in an online course or f2f course on college campus. Early College Uses multiple measures, targets underrepresented students. Dedicated course sections organized within pathways connected to a career. Student completes course at the high school with a university faculty member or on college campus. Calendar driven by district. Built in, class-level support. State-funded tuition and course materials. Calendar driven by university. Traditional support mechanisms. Course tuition and materials are typically paid for by the student and/or district.
Benefits of Early College Programs Recent AIR Research indicates that students who participate in early college programs: More likely to graduate high school. More likely to enroll in college. More likely to complete a bachelor's degree. Complete a bachelor's degree in significantly less time. Consistent across demographics. https://www.air.org/project/evaluating-impact-early-college-high-schools New Massachusetts data indicates that of the state s 2019 early college cohort, students were 38% more likely to enroll in college the fall following high school graduation and 53% more likely to remain enrolled one year later (MassINC, 2021). https://www.luminafoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/early-college-as-a-force-for-equity.pdf
