  9. ABOUT 30 TO 40 MINUTES TO DO. LITERACY Today and tomorrow, we would like you to practise your descriptive writing. On the following slides, there are reminders and examples and tasks based on the techniques you can use.

  10. 1) Powerful synonyms for boring words 1) Powerful synonyms for boring words We over use verbs like say and go . Your first job is to list as many synonyms for these verbs as you can (you could use an online thesaurus to help you if you are stuck). Underline your favourites and send your list in to us.

  11. 2) Powerful adjectives in expanded noun 2) Powerful adjectives in expanded noun phrases phrases Remember to make your writing more exciting and descriptive by adding adjectives to your nouns. Be careful to mix in some simpler sentences however to vary your writing. Find adjectives to describe the nouns below before writing a descriptive sentence for each noun. Mosque daffodil waves (on the sea) mountain You could add a prepositional phrase (behind the moon, over the clock, in the middle of the field) to add interest to your sentences.

  12. 3) Figurative language 3) Figurative language Figurative language includes these elements: Similes compare something or someone to something else to make the description more powerful. The boy ran as fast as a cheetah. Like a bouncing ball, the girl careered through the crowd. Alliteration is where words next to each other start with the same letter. The smooth, shiny snake slithered through the undergrowth. Tall, towering trees tottered on the edge of the cliff. Personification makes something that is not alive sound or do something like a person. The trees marched along the skyline. At the edge of the forest, the rock squatted like an evil toad (this contains a simile as well). Metaphor makes description more powerful by describing something as something else. The snow was a thick, white blanket over the field. The moon was a glowing, yellow face in the sky.

  13. Figurative language Use these elements of descriptive language to describe the scene below. You could make it the start of a story if you like.

  14. PE PE

  15. Extreme sports dance Listen to the dance lesson in the link below and prepare your own dance based on kayaking and rock climbing. It would be great if you could send in film of you doing it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b03g6vym

  16. FRENCH FRENCH On the website, Mrs Dale has put up lots of ideas to help you practise your French. You will need to scroll down to the work right at the beginning of this lockdown just under the work for 7 January. Today, we would like you to have a go at Les Jours, Les Mois et Les Saisons (scroll down until you find it). Be creative and make a poster showing the different seasons and using the correct French vocabulary for the seasons and the months. Decorate it and make your illustrations fit the seasons. If you are up for the challenge, you could search French adjectives to describe the weather in the different seasons.

  17. Reading Reading Make sure that you spend between 15 and 30 mins reading independently every day. Thank you all of you, who have completed your STAR test at home. If you haven t already, you need to access this through the Rooks Nest Computer Start page and make sure that you complete the test in one sitting don t leave it and hope to come back it as this won t work. We also expect you to complete an AR quiz every time you finish a book at least 2 before half term. We will be looking to see how you are doing.
