Chapter 19: Jesus Gives His Life for Us - Lesson 1 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. --John 15:13
The Agony in the Garden Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, or the Garden of Olives, to pray after the Last Supper He asked His disciples to stay awake while He prayed, but they fell asleep Jesus saw all of our sins that night and He was sad He knew that He must pay for our sins He reconciled His will with the Father s will Your will, not mine, be done.
Jesus was arrested Soldiers came to the garden to arrest Jesus They were cruel, but Jesus was gentle Jesus knew that He must fulfill God s plan Jesus was taken to the high priest and Jewish leaders They wrongly accused Jesus, but He stood silently Jesus faced death by crucifixion How do you think Jesus was feeling? Why was Jesus upset? How would you feel in that situation?

Jesus Death The Jewish leaders could not put Jesus to death because of the law The Jewish people had to get permission from Pontius Pilate who was the Roman governor of Judea He had the power to put Jesus to death or set Him free Pilate gave in to the crowd as they yelled, Crucify him! and He was sentenced to death How do you think Jesus felt while the crowd was shouting for Him to be crucified?
Jesus was treated like a criminal The soldiers grabbed Him and beat Him with whips They pushed a crown of thorns on His head and mocked Him He was forced to carry His cross and was crucified on Mount Calvary
