Jesus demonstrated forgiveness on the cross, starting with "Father, Forgive them" (Luke 23:34). His actions and words serve as an ultimate example of forgiveness, urging us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. Through His sacrifice, forgiveness and redemption are made possible for all who believe.

  2. Jesus has completed His ministry. We now come to the culminating event for His coming His crucifixion. While on the cross, the gospels record 7 sayings of Jesus. Today s lessons will address these 7 sayings

  3. Father, Forgive them Luke 23:34 Likely, His first recorded words on the cross These are words of forgiveness. Jesus is the ultimate example of forgiveness both in word and deed Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  4. Father, Forgive them Luke 23:34 Jesus continually taught forgiveness - Matthew 6:12, 14-15 the model prayer - Matthew 9:2, 5-6; Luke 7:47-48 He forgave sins - Parables of forgiveness Matthew 18:21-35, Luke 7:40-50 - How often Matthew 18:22, Luke 17:4 Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  7. Father, Forgive them Luke 23:34 The cross is the ultimate act of forgiveness Isaiah 53:12 Ephesians 1:7 we have redemption through His blood Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  8. Father, Forgive them Luke 23:34 Consider, forgiveness is NOT an unconditional act - We must act to receive that forgiveness Acts 2:37-38, 22:16, etc. - Even as Christians, we need forgiveness when we sin and must act 1 John 1:9, James 5:16, etc. - Finally, we must be willing to forgive others also Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  9. Today, you will be with Me Luke 23:43 He was crucified between 2 thieves (Lk. 23:33, Matt. 27:44). Like the crowd, they were mocking Him. But one thief rebuked the other (39- 42), then asked the Lord to remember Him when You come in Your kingdom Jesus replied, Today, you will be with Me in paradise. Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  10. Today, you will be with Me Luke 23:43 Was that thief saved at that time? Yes! Jesus promised him paradise. BUT that is NOT the end of the discussion. This thief is used as an example of faith only , or an argument to dismiss the need for baptism. Let us consider some things. Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  11. Today, you will be with Me Luke 23:43 Is this a pattern for our salvation? 1) How do you know he was not baptized? Can you prove it? Consider how much he understood more than the corrupt leaders. BUT we will assume he was not! Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  12. Today, you will be with Me Luke 23:43 Is this a pattern for our salvation? 2) Jesus, while on earth, could forgive sins at will. - We do NOT have that capacity now. We have God s word which tells us what to do Matthew 7:21-23, Acts 2:38-39, 41, 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21, Galatians 3:27, etc. Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  13. Today, you will be with Me Luke 23:43 Is this a pattern for our salvation? 3) As Jesus forgave the thief, He had not yet died. Therefore, the Old Law was still in effect Colossians 2:14, Hebrews 9:16ff Thus, we cannot apply this example to us today Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  14. Woman, behold your son John 19:26-27 At the foot of the cross was Mary, other women and the disciple whom He loved. Jesus said to him to behold her as his mother. From that hour he took her to his own home Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  15. Woman, behold your son John 19:26-27 In this expression we find the compassion and care of Jesus. Even while suffering on the cross, He still took care of His responsibilities Jesus continually showed compassion - Mark 1:40-41; Matthew 9:36- 37, 14:14, 15:32ff, 20:34; Luke 7:13-14 Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  16. Woman, behold your son John 19:26-27 We learn from Him to be compassionate Ephesians 4:32, 1 Peter 3:8, etc. Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  17. Woman, behold your son John 19:26-27 We also learn to provide for our family The man - Ephesians 5:28-29, 1 Timothy 5:8, 1 Peter 3:7 - Children in later years 1 Timothy 5:4, 8; cf. Matthew 15:4-6, Ephesians 6:2, Proverbs 23:22 - An example of making plans for the future e.g. insurance, savings, etc. Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  18. Woman, behold your son John 19:26-27 Even in His darkest hour, Jesus showed great compassion and concern for others Jesus s Teachings From the Cross

  19. Even on the cross, Jesus continued to teach. What have you learned from Him?
