The Power of Forgiveness: Healing Ourselves and Others

Forgiveness

“We can never make
peace in the outer world
until we make peace
ourselves
.”

Dalai Lama

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is
a choice.
a process.
not always easy.
freedom.
peace.

Forgiveness is not:
weakness.
forgetting what happened.
relieving the person of responsibility.
saying you instantly trust someone (or ever).

Forgiveness model

1.
Express the pain – feel heard
.

2.
Make a decision – Are you
prepared to let go? In what ways
has your anger/bitterness
impacted your life?

3.
Safety and security – Establish
safety and feel secure in yourself.

4.
Let go and move on – Open a
pathway for healing and develop
a stronger sense of identity.

Yehiel Dinur was a holocaust survivor who was a
witness during the trial of the infamous Nazi war
criminal, Adolf Eichmann. Dinur entered the
courtroom and stared at the man behind the
bulletproof glass - the man who had presided over
the slaughter of millions of Jews like Dinur. The
court was hushed as a victim confronted a butcher
of his people. Suddenly Dinur began to sob and
collapsed to the floor. But not out of anger or
bitterness. As he explained later in an interview,
what struck him was a terrifying realisation. “I was
afraid about myself,” Dinur said. “I saw that I am
capable to do this…Exactly like he.” In a moment of
chilling clarity, Dinur saw the skull beneath the skin.
“Eichmann,” he concluded, “is in all of us.

Self-Forgiveness

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner
was you.”
(Lewis B. Smedes)

“I think the first step is to understand that forgiveness does not
exonerate the perpetrator. Forgiveness liberates the victim. It’s a
gift you give yourself.”
(T.D Jakes)

“Forgive yourself for what you think you’ve done or not done. At
every moment, you had your reasons for all of your actions and
decisions. You’ve always done the best that you could do. Forgive
yourself.” (Doreen Virtue)

“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to
that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger
than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and
get free.”
(Katherine Ponder)

Do you struggle to
forgive yourself?

“Love yourself – accept
yourself – forgive yourself –
and be good to yourself,
because without you the rest
of us are without a source of
many wonderful
things.”

Leo F. Buscaglia

Positive self-regard

Self-forgiveness involves making a decision to act in a way that is consistent with
our values and the restoration of a positive sense of self
in which you are
able to
live with respect for yourself as an imperfect but valuable person.

Letting Go
Try and think of things in
your life you’re holding
onto. Would it make life
easier if you were to let
them go?

Deciding to hold on to the past will hold you back from
creating a strong sense of self - a self that isn’t defined
by your past, but rather by who you want to be.
