So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came
to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are old,
and your sons do not follow your ways;
now appoint a
king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
 But
when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this
displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.

And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people
are saying to you;
it is not you they have rejected, but
they have rejected me as their king.
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)

Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let
them know what the king who will reign over them
will claim as his rights.” Samuel told all the words of
the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king.
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they
said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all
the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out
before us and fight our battles.”
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)
1 Samuel 8:1–22 (NIV)

When Samuel heard all that the people said, he
repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered,
“Listen to them and give them a king.” Then Samuel
said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own
town.”

Therefore God exalted him to

God the Father.

There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose
name was Kish… Kish had a son named Saul, as
handsome a young man as could be found anywhere
in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
1 Samuel 9:1–2 (NIV)
1 Samuel 9:1–2 (NIV)

As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them; they have been found. And to
whom is all the desire of Israel turned, if not to you
and your whole family line?” Saul answered, “But am I
not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel, and
is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of
Benjamin? Why do you say such a thing to me?”
1 Samuel 9:1–2 (NIV)
1 Samuel 9:1–2 (NIV)

Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they
looked for him, he was not to be found. So they
inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here
yet?” And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself
among the supplies.” They ran and brought him out,
and as he stood among the people he was a head
taller than any of the others.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be
careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be

I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against
me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So
I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.” “You have
done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept
the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had,
he would have established your kingdom over Israel

If Satan can’t get you to do bad in the flesh, he will
try to get you to do good in the flesh.

Partial obedience is not obedience.
God cares way more about you obeying Him than
about what you do for Him.

And the Lord sent you on a mission and told you, ‘Go
and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites,
until they are all dead.’ Why haven’t you obeyed the
Lord? Why did you rush for the plunder and do what
was evil in the Lord’s sight?”
1 Samuel 15:18–23 (NLT)
1 Samuel 15:18–23 (NLT)

“But I did obey the Lord,” Saul insisted. “I carried out
the mission he gave me. I brought back King Agag, but
I destroyed everyone else. Then my troops brought in
the best of the sheep, goats, cattle, and plunder to
sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
1 Samuel 15:18–23 (NLT)
1 Samuel 15:18–23 (NLT)

But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the
Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your
obedience to his voice? Listen!
Obedience is better
than sacrifice
, and submission is better than offering
the fat of rams.

Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it

the people and Saul’s officers alike.

When the victorious Israelite army was returning
home after David had killed the Philistine, women
from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King
Saul. They sang and danced for joy with tambourines
and cymbals. This was their song: “Saul has killed his
thousands, and David his ten thousands!”

This made Saul very angry. “What’s this?” he said.
“They credit David with ten thousands and me with
only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their
king!” So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on
David.

The very next day a tormenting spirit from God
overwhelmed Saul, and he began to rave in his house
like a madman. David was playing the harp, as he did
each day. But Saul had a spear in his hand, and he
suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the
wall. But David escaped him twice. Saul was then
afraid of David, for the Lord was with David and had
turned away from Saul.

When the people of Israel rejected God as their king and desired a human ruler, they prioritized worldly standards over divine leadership. The story emphasizes the significance of putting God first, acknowledging Him as the ultimate authority. By focusing on serving God rather than making Him a servant to our desires, we align ourselves with His will and establish a deeper connection with our faith.
