Some of his best known volumes are many cargoes , captains all , And the skipper s wooing His tales are masterpieces both of humour and construction. The Boatswain's Mate The Boatswain's Mate is an opera in one act.
THE BOATSWAINS MATE The Boatswain s Mate is dramatized by H.C. Sargent. The Boatswain s mate is a delightful comedy with an extremely amusing story. George ?Benn, an ex- boatswain, has set his heart on marrying the attractive widow Mrs. Waters and becoming the landlord of The Beehive Inn, which she own. He hires Ned Travers, an ex-soldier, to stage a mock- burglary at her house so that he could win her heart by rescuing her. But the scheme misfires and Travers walks off with the lady.
CHARACTERS AND SETTING Mrs. Waters Benn Travers The scene is laid in the bar at The Beehive inn. The time of the scene is 10 PM.
SCENE I Benn starts his usual proposal talk to Mrs. Waters. But she, an widow, neither clearly rejects nor accepts his proposal. When Benn is about to leave Mrs. Waters ask him to take care of the bar, since she has to have her night dinner. Benn accepts it and being alone in the bar he thinks of how to win the favor of Mrs. Waters.
SCENE II Benn s thought was interpreted by the arrival of Travers, an ex-soldier. They both engage in conversation. Benn tells to Travers about his love towards the widow. Travers in the beginning feels sorry for Benn and wonders how any women can reject Benn. There was a small misunderstanding between Benn and Travers regarding the Tobacco pipe and Benn gives for him with a plan.
BENS PLAN Benn asked Travers to act as a burglar, because he thinks that by saving Mrs. Waters he can get a place in her heart. In the beginning Travers was quite shocked. He didn t accept. But Benn somehow want this plan to be fulfilled. So he ask Travers to help him out. Travers refuse by telling that he will be imprisoned for 5 years, the neighbors will beat him up and so and so. Benn promises Travers that he will give him a quid if he help him.
BENN AND TRAVERS Travers was keep on talking about his experience in South Africa. Benn kept on asking him to act as a burglar. At last Benn writes a written note putting his own name and address stating that he have asked Ned Travers to pretend to be a burglar in Mrs. Waters house. On seeing this Travers was quite satisfied and he accept for the plan. He keeps the paper with himself.
SCENE III Travers leaves the inn and Mrs. Waters enters after finishing her dinner. She asked did anyone came but Benn just replied no one in particular. Benn tried to frightened her by saying that living all alone in such a kind of house is not safe but Mrs. Waters never bothered. Benn leaves the inn. Mrs. Waters goes to sleep.
SCENE IV Travers enters into Mrs. Waters house as planned through the window. Benn was standing outside. After much struggle in the darkness Travers enters into Mrs. Waters house through the window. He slowly went into the house but unfortunately a mug falls on the door, and Mrs. Waters woke up and came searching for the noise with a gun.
TRAVERS AND MRS. WATERS Travers was quite shocked on seeing Mrs. Waters with the gun. He explained to Mrs. Waters that this was all just a plan by a well known person of her and he shows the letter written by Benn. On reading it Mrs. Waters gets angry on both the persons. In the midst Travers was worried about Mrs. Waters and asked her to have a thick cloth around herself.
THE TURN OF EVENTS After reading the letter Mrs. Waters plans for a revenge. She asked Travers to help her out or else he will be screwed. Travers accepts this. She shoots the gun in open space and runs to Benn and tells him that she has shot the burglar. Benn was dumbfound on hearing it. Adding to his horror Mrs. Waters said to him to dig a grave to burry the burglar s body. Benn did it with full of confusion
SCENE V Benn was digging a grave and Mrs. Waters went inside the house telling him that she will go wand bring out the body and clean up the mess over there. Inside the house Mrs. Waters peeped through the window and was looking at Benn, While Travers too was watching at Benn from behind. Benn saw this and he was taken aback and he thinks that the ghost of Travers is haunting Mrs. Waters inside the house.
Mrs. Water came out and asked Benn to leave the place because if some one sees they may get suspicious and she will do the rest of the burying. Benn left the place heartless. Travers comes out of the house and joins with Mrs. Waters. They both engage in a deep conversation about their life styles.
SCENE VI When Travers was almost wooing on Mrs. Waters, she forces him to leave the place. At that time Benn returns back and tells that he could not leave Mrs. Water all alone in such a complicated situation. Suddenly Travers appeared before Benn, and Benn fell into the grave which he himself dug. When he comes up he was welcomed by Travers who calls himself as the future landlord of The Beehive.
