SURRENDERING ISAAC
WHY TEST? TEST TEST TEMPTATION TEMPTATION Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; James 1:13 James 1:2-4 God Godwill test you to build you up Devil Devilwill tempt you to tear you down 2
ISSAC Issue of the heart Then God said, Take your son, your only son, whom you love Isaac and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you. 3
SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. V 3 4
SURRENDERING (Obedience) Obedience require Trust, Trust required Knowing the person And those who know Your name will put their trust in You Psalms 9:10 Knowledge Trust Obedience 5
SURRENDER IN FAITH SURRENDER IN FAITH On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you. V 4-5 6
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:17-19 7
SURRENDER WITH ANTICIPATION SURRENDER WITH ANTICIPATION The fire and wood are here, Isaac said, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? Abraham answered, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And the two of them went on together. V 7-8 8
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. He said, Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me. V 11-12 Does God already know if Abraham will pass the test? Genuine faith produces action 9
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided. v 13-14 Provision after surrender Provision for forgiveness Provision for redemption 10
How do you experience Gods provision? GOD PROVIDES WHEN WE SURRENDER Knowing God God s provision Believe/Trust in him 1 3 5 Surrender immediately Surrender in faith Surrender with anticipation 2 4 Knowing God s promises Surrender/Obedience 11
A TEST TO BLESS GREATLY Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed V 15-17 A test to grow, move forward into maturity Bless - Greatly Bless Multiply Greatly Multiply 12
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. V 18 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, And to seeds, as referring to many, but rather to one, And to your seed, that is, Christ. Galatians 3:16 Jesus became sacrificial lamb 13
FATHERS FAITHFULNESS ABRAHAM ABRAHAM GOD GOD Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, Abraham! Abraham! When He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Here I am, he replied. Romans 8:32 12 Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said. Do not do anything to him God Goddid not allow Abraham to sacrifice sacrificeIssac God God did not spare his son but delivered deliveredhim 14
SONS OBEDIENCE ISSAC ISSAC JESUS JESUS Isaac carried the wood Jesus carried the wood (Cross) Isaac offered himself willingly Jesus offered himself willingly Substitute was provided There was no substitute. He was the substitute.
