Surrendering Isaac - A Story of Faith and Obedience

SURRENDERING
ISAAC

WHY TEST?

TEMPTATION
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For
God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
James 1:13

TEST
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you
face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing
of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish
its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking
anything.
James 1:2-4

God
will test you to build you up
Devil
will tempt you to tear you down

ISSAC – Issue of the heart

Then God said, “Take
your son, your
only son, whom you love—Isaac
and go to the region of Moriah.
Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering
on a mountain I will show you.”

SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY
Early the next morning Abraham got up
and loaded his donkey. He
took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had
cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God
had told him about.

SURRENDER IN FAITH
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the
distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I
and the boy go over there.
We will worship and then we will come
back to you
.
V 4-5
6

By faith
Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.
He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one
and only son,
even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac
that your offspring will be reckoned.
” Abraham reasoned that God
could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did
receive Isaac back from death.
Hebrews 11:17-19

SURRENDER WITH ANTICIPATION
The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
 Abraham answered, “
God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.
And the two of them
went on together
.
V 7-8

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham,
Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “
Do not stretch out your hand
against the lad
, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since
you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
V 11-12

Slide Note

- Intro

- Life of Abraham, in the light of right way up

- Decision making

- In this world for you to take a decision, you will need explanation and evidence of the matter

- In the kingdom of God, a decision is based on faith.

- Obedience in faith

- One of such case is what we are going to look in today’s meditation

- Choosing Abraham?

- Lucky dip?

- Random selection?

- What do you think? Does God already know if Abraham will pass the test?

- Abraham was tested for almost 40 years, there are few tests he failed and few he passed.

- We can consider the test in Chap 22 as final test. I am saying its final as we don’t see any record of God testing Abraham after this.

- Tests passed & failed
