By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
FIVE INSIGHTS INTO FAITH
1) Faith in God should flourish despite uncertainty in our lives
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
2) Faith in God should flourish despite discomfort and problems in our lives
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
3) Faith in God means we can look beyond our inability and to God's goodness and His ability
And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
It's never about what we have to do; it is always about what Christ has already done on our behalf!
4) Faith is not blind; it involves reasoning
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
By faith Abraham offered Issac as a sacrifice...Reasoning that God could raise Him from the dead...
That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. 2 Timothy 1:12
I KNOW WHOM I HAVE BELIEVED
Understanding, reflecting and reasoning about the character of God builds our faith in Him!
5) Faith in Christ is not just about the immediate, but even more so about the ultimate
Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:8-11, 17-19 NIV
GIFT OF FAITH Faith in uncertainty Faith in discomfort and problems Faith in God's goodness and ability; not ours A reasonable faith; not blind faith Faith for ultimate; not just immediate
