Project Key Terms Key Terms: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) Death of a baby less <1 year old in which the cause was not obvious before investigation Often happens during sleep Accidental and explained infant suffocations in a sleeping environment Include Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) All unknown or undetermined causes of death

SUID Case Registry Project The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention SUID monitoring programs in 32 sites, covering approximately 2 in 5 SUID Cases in the United States Goals: Monitor SUID trends and characteristics that may affect the risk of SUID, such as infant sleep position Improve quality and consistency of Death Scene Investigations Use data to reduce future SUID deaths Implement enhanced community-based SUID prevention to address community-specific needs Develop community participatory data-driven planning to address challenges to the implementation of safe sleep practices

  7. TN SUID Grant Overview Why: implement new strategies, as well as enhance existing ones, to improve surveillance and prevention of SUID in Tennessee. Purpose: to enhance and strengthen the state s system and to develop data-driven SUID prevention strategies aligned with American Academy of Pediatrics guidance. Completed Grant Activity Outcomes: 1) Increase in high quality, timely data in SUID, including information on disparities and social determinants of health, for program improvement. 2) Increase in number of implemented policies and practices to standardized and reduce inequity in investigation practices. 3) Increase opportunities for networking, cooperation, and data sharing with communities disproportionately impacted by sleep- related infant deaths. 4) Increase implementation of community, data-driven prevention strategies for disproportionately impacted communities.

TN SUID Grant Action Items Component A Identify and categorize all SUID cases in a timely manner Import Dates for Local CFR Teams: Review all cases within 150 days of identification Enter all case information into NCFRP Case Reporting System within 30 days of CFR meeting Identify: Rick Factors Burden Prevention Opportunities Social determinants of Health Disseminate Data: Death Scene Investigators Public Community Partners Component C Safe Sleep Collaborative Statewide Needs Assessment Listening Sessions Focus Groups Partner Surveys Education Messaging Safe Sleep Strategic Plan
