Strengthening Curriculum and Instruction for 21st Century Skills Alignment

Curriculum & Instruction Strengthening
for greater competence: key questions

Curriculum: what are we teaching?
Is the curriculum aligned to our national vision: “
…..Nigeria will be one of
the 20 largest economies in the world, able to consolidate its leadership
role in Africa and establish itself as a significant player in the global
economic and political arena.”?
Is it aligned to the goals of education articulated in the NPE?
Is it aligned to the globally acknowledged 21
st
 century skills i.e the
combination of skills that will enable school graduates to function effectively
in their societies and contribute very well to the development of their
society?
 What are these 21
st
 century skills?

Curriculum & Instruction Strengthening for
greater competence: key questions………

To find out if we have made progress in ensuring that our school graduates (basic
to higher education) do acquire the 21
st
century skills we need to determine the
extent to which:
The skills have been clearly articulated in our policy documents and plans e.g
the NPE, other national plans/roadmaps etc
The 21
st
century skills are specifically mentioned in the curriculum; and
There is a framework that describes how the knowledge and skills are
acquired by learners over time i.e from lower to the higher levels of
education.

Impediments

The Curriculum and the way it is taught: too much focus on mastery of
content, transmission model of teaching
Capacity gap: Teachers do not have adequate understanding of the national
vision/goals and the way they are aligned with the 21
st
 century skills and
how
to facilitate the learning of these skills using active
learning/constructivist methodologies
Teacher Training: curriculum, mode of delivery, practicum
Resources gap in schools

What is to be done

Align the curriculum more closely with the national vision and goals
Embed the 21
st
 Century

knowledge and skills in the curriculum based on a
Framework that spells out very clearly how learning of the knowledge and
skills should happen over time at the basic, senior secondary and higher
education levels.
Revise the curriculum based on the Framework and build the capacity of
teachers to implement it including how to use new assessment systems that
go beyond mere mastery of content and assess higher order skills e.g critical
thinking, problem solving, creativity etc
Provide learning resources and harness the potentials of ICT and OER.
