  4. What is strategic planning?

  5. What is strategic planning really? A STRATEGIC PLAN looks at an organisation in 3-5 year increments and sets goals toward the vision STRATEGIES are actionable statements that the organisation will take to achieve the vision and implement the mission An organisation has only one strategic plan at a time

  6. Input from key stakeholders is very important THAT S YOU

  7. Strategic objectives or priorities focus the organisation EVERYTHING the organisation does should move it towards achieving the vision and mission, hold to the values and take the context into account

  8. Strategic Planning It is not possible to plan strategically without knowing where you are going Thus, the VISION and MISSION of the organisation are key MUST also take the context into account: internal and especially external-this is what makes the plan strategic

  9. Pieces of a strategic plan Review vision, mission and values- adjust or develop as needed Then do an analysis of the context- Internal (strengths and weakness of the organisation) External (opportunities and threats: what is going on OUTSIDE the organization)

  10. TOWS

  11. Pieces of a strategic plan The Board, Executive or a planning subcommittee then considers all of this information and from it develops a strategic plan o big picture priorities o Goals and objective that will help the organisation achieve those priorities o These take the opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses into account From the strategic plan comes the operational/work plans

  12. The ASYCBC strategic planning process Over the next few months, meet with School Councils, Education Partners Individual discussions/meeti ngs with members of the Executive and the ED That important input will be put together into a report for the Executive Is starting today I ll work with them to develop strategic priorities and objectives which will then inform the workplan In early fall, Executive will gather to review vision, mission and values and do the SWOT/TOWS analysis There may be some adjustments to the 23/24 work plan Aim to wrap up project October 31, 2023

  13. From the Education Act Under section 121 of the Yukon Education Act, it states: School Boards and Councils may form and become members of an Association of School Boards and Councils and may make grants or payments to the association.

  14. ASYCBC Mission (from the website) The purpose of the Association is to assist and provide support to school councils and school boards in fulfilling their mission which is to enhance student learning through the cooperative efforts of parents, students, educators, government and other members of the community. The Association will support its Members in fulfilling their mandate in accordance with the applicable requirements of the Education Act.

  15. ASYCBC Mandate (closely connect to Mission) Through its activities, the Association provides services and supports to its members. The focus is on working collaboratively for high quality public education and promoting and supporting the value of locally elected School Councils, Boards and Committees. The objectives of the Association include: To undertake and/or coordinate project initiatives identified as being of a common priority by its membership and disseminate any resulting information. To ensure access to training programs on behalf of its members. To ensure effective communication between the Association, its members and external contacts. To provide expert advice to its members. AYSCBC can represent membership, as directed, on matters affecting public education in the Yukon.

  16. ASYCBC Guiding Principles (Values) Education must focus on what is best for student learning. The Yukon education system belongs to and is accountable to all members of the community. Parents and community members have a right to know how well their school is doing and what actions will be taken to improve student performance, to contribute to the school s development and improvement, and to be consulted about and receive feedback on the decisions that affect their children and their school.

  17. ASYCBC Guiding Principles (Values) Parents are valuable resources. Parents know their children best. They are their children s first and most important teachers. They are also excellent sources of information about the local community, its resources, priorities, and needs. Education in the Yukon is the joint responsibility of governments, educators, school councils, school Executives, parents, students and communities. This relationship is essential given the need for consistent territory-wide standards and the diversity of Yukon s communities. First Nation, Catholic and Francophone Yukon people have additional constitutional and statutory rights that must be honoured.
