WHAT IS A JOINT COUNCIL

An association of communities in a geographic area that
share common issues and concerns related to local
governance.
Typically comprised of incorporated municipalities, as well
as local service districts in some cases.
No legislative authority. The primary goal is the combined
and strategic advocacy to other levels of government and
planning for regional partnership opportunities.
Discuss issues like regional service sharing (snow clearing,
animal control, regional land use planning, etc.),
economic development, and the greater utilization of
current resources and infrastructure.
Great opportunity to network on a regular basis with
neighbouring communities.
By working together, joint councils can make communities
stronger and more influential on issues of regional

Joint councils are associations of communities sharing common local governance issues. They focus on advocacy, collaboration with other government levels, and regional planning. Active joint councils like Conception Bay North and proposed ones like Whitbourne-Trinity Bay South aim to enhance community strength and influence. Operating with key roles, joint councils require regular meetings and committed leadership to succeed. Successful initiatives include safety improvements and economic development projects. Through collaborative efforts, joint councils promote regional cooperation and resource utilization.
