SPORTS VOLUNTEERS MOVEMENT BOTSWANA (SVM) Sub-structure of Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Established in 2000 Launched in 2012
WHY SVM AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To create capacity building for sport development inline with both Botswana vision an BNSC vision To educate community about the importance of sports in health and quality of life To promote participation in sports activities by members of the public To produce trained personnel to serve sports in various capacities, ie, admin, fundraising, marketing, etc To encourage spirit of cooperation amongst all sporting codes To develop interpersonal friendship amongst individuals or communities
SVM EVENTS PARTICIPATION Some of the successful events that SVM offered the services, successfully national and internationally; National Botswana games held after every year Botswana African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana Netball World Cup 2017 in Gaborone, Botswana WBSC World Congress in Gaborone, Botswana Region 5 Youth Games in Maseru, Lesotho Gaborone Golden Grand Prix 2023 And so many local events countrywide(Motor sport, athletics, and for other sporting codes)
DECLINE IN VOLUNTEERISM/ VOLUNTEER LAPSE Though the country has numerous sporting events, SVM is experiencing a decline in volunteering The movement experience low new registrations at respective regions Minimal volunteer rotation at events
REASONS FOR VOLUNTEER LAPSE Lack of Incentives Volunteer burn out Lack of role clarity during events Personal engagements Loss of interest Feeling unappreciated Feeling unheard
STRATEGIES TO ENCOURAGE AND RETAIN VOLUNTEERISM Value volunteers support Educate the community International participation Attract motivated/celebrity volunteers Empower volunteers with training Match volunteers with their passionate skills Provide leadership/growth opportunities
STRATEGIES TO ENCOURAGE AND RETAIN VOLUNTEERISM CONT Develop networking opportunities Be flexible to volunteers allow them to voice out their concerns, and give feedback Make surveys more especially for those who have stopped participating to determine the reasons for sitting back.
CONCLUSION In Conclusion, Volunteer retention comes down to the movement s ability to form genuine, long lasting and personal connections with volunteers, cultivating the relationship. Volunteers participate because of the understanding of the strategy, they should see themselves being part of the strategy, driving it and being part of the movement achievements. Their engagement and being appreciated for the unpaid services is key A volunteer is a gem, it s a Diamond, needs to be handled with care A volunteer should not only be recognised, but- esteemed and appreciated A volunteer is at your organisation NOT because they have to be BUT because they want to be
