South Carolina conducts statewide assessments known as SC READY and SC PASS to measure student proficiency in ELA, Math, and Science. All students in grades 3-8 are required to take SC READY, except those with significant cognitive disabilities. SC PASS assesses Science for grades 4, 6, and 8. The assessments align with state standards and federal regulations, emphasizing text-dependent analysis in writing prompts. Estimated assessment times and sample items are available for preparation.

All students in grades 3 8 are required to take the SC READY except those students with significant cognitive disabilities who qualify for the South Carolina National Center and State Collaborative (SC-NCSC) alternate assessment.

  5. WRITING COMPONENT The writing prompt will be a text-dependent analysis (or TDA) item. This type of item requires that students read a piece of text or passage and draw upon that text for their written responses e.g., support their responses with evidence from the text. The type of type of text that the students read and respond to for the TDA item may be drawn from different genres or modes, but the type of writing that the students produce is not mode-specific per se. The TDA item is scored with a holistic rubric that has a point range of 1 (lowest) to 4 (highest). The holistic rubric is located at this link:www.ed.sc.gov/tests/tests-files/sc-ready- files/tda-rubric. To reflect the importance of student writing, the score on the TDA item is then weighted by a factor of 4 for a maximum of 16 points.
