Options for 9th grade Social Studies United States History (Course# SO-401-1) On Grade Level, fulfills US History Graduation Requirement This course studies US history from 1877 to present. Students will learn major concepts and themes in United States history, with a strong emphasis on: the analysis of complex texts including primary and secondary sources. evaluating for and making evidence based claims The Historical Thinking Skills: chronological reasoning, comparison and contextualization, creating evidence based arguments, and historical interpretation. Most work is completed in class with teacher support, emphasizing the building of strong skills.
Honors United States History (Course# SO 402-1) In addition to the description of United States History (2209), students will: complete an original research project by participating in National History Day. need to have a commitment to academics, and demonstrate self-motivation and self-advocacy. learn skills and content that will help prepare them for future coursework and assessments in secondary social studies at the honors level, as well as introduce skills necessary at the AP level. The recommendation of a student s current social studies teacher and consistently high achievement in previous social studies coursework is desirable. An introductory understanding of the Historical Thinking Skills will be needed.
United States History GT (Course# SO 403-1) In addition to the descriptions of United States History and United States History Honors, students in United States History - G/T will: Conduct at least two historical research investigations including participation in the National History Day competition. need to have a commitment to academics and demonstrate self-motivation, self advocacy, and independent learning. learn skills and content that will help prepare students for AP American Government. There is a strong emphasis on the analysis of history through reading, writing, and speaking. Students should have demonstrated success in these areas in previous Social Studies coursework. The recommendation of a student s current social studies teacher and consistently high achievement in previous social studies course work is desirable.
