Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders appointed by colleges to enhance the support network for residents. They promote community development, enforce policies, respond to emergencies, and maintain a safe residential environment. Successful RAs possess qualities like social maturity, adaptability, and strong communication skills to assist in student development effectively.

Resident Assistants Roles & Responsibilities Presented by Charles Pang, Resident Fellow
Who are Resident Assistants (RA)? Resident Assistants are student leaders appointed by the College after selection and interview. RAs play a key role to strengthen the support network for college residents by looking after their welfare and enriching their residential experience. RAs work in partnership with the College s Resident Fellows (RFs) and Management to achieve the highest possible standards of residential life.
Qualities of a successful RA Personal warmth and social maturity Willingness to be challenged Capacity to deal with change Patience and a sense of humor Ability to manage personal emotions Strong people & communication skills Able to work with a variety of personalities and lifestyles without judgment Team player who is responsible and accountable A sincere desire to assist in student s personal development Ability to balance pressures from RA duties and studies
Major Roles and Responsibilities Promote a sense of belonging by encouraging residents to participate in and contribute to their community. 1. Community Development 2. Emergency intervention Promote an environment conducive to harmonious living and learning. 3. Policy Enforcement Familiarise with the needs of residents by engaging them individually or in small groups. 4. Information Resource
Major Roles and Responsibilities Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies by following protocols and guidelines 1. Community Development 2. Emergency intervention Report all emergencies and crises to RFs and college management 3. Policy Enforcement Maintain a safe and secure residential environment through vigilance and good situation awareness 4. Information Resource
Major Roles and Responsibilities Ensure that residents comply with the housing agreement 1. Community Development Educate residents on the housing rules and demerit point system 2. Emergency intervention Report any housing rules violation, student misconduct or inappropriate behaviour 3. Policy Enforcement 4. Information Resource Promote a safe, secure and positive residential environment
Major Roles and Responsibilities Serve as a valuable resource for any resident with questions. 1. Community Development Familiar with key contact numbers (e.g., duty RA, Campus Emergency & Security, ambulance, police, crisis hotlines) 2. Emergency intervention 3. Policy Enforcement Refer residents to relevant campus or community resources for any help they may need 4. Information Resource
RA Obligations RAs are required to stay in residence unless granted leave or special permission from college management 1. Live-in Residence 2. Attend RA Training 3. Perform Duty RA duties Able to serve for a full Academic Year (Aug 2023 to May 2024) 4. Assist with college activities
RA Obligations Attend RA Training Camp from 1 to 4 August 2023 1. Live-in Residence 2. Attend RA Training RA Induction & Bonding Mental Health Literacy and Helping Skills (MHLHS) Training 3. Perform Duty RA duties 4. Assist with college activities Red Cross First Aid Certification Any other relevant training as decided by College
RA Obligations RAs are rostered to perform duties (Duty RA) for the college and houses 1. Live-in Residence 2. Attend RA Training Be contactable by phone from 6pm to 8.30am on weekdays and (6am to 6pm) or (6pm to 6am) on weekends. 3. Perform Duty RA duties Respond to incidents, issues or requests for assistance (e.g., room lock-out) within 15 minutes 4. Assist with college activities
RA Obligations Mass and after-hours check-ins 1. Live-in Residence Room verification exercises 2. Attend RA Training Distribution of mails 3. Perform Duty RA duties Fire safety drills 4. Assist with college activities Serve in sub-committees (DH, publicity, welfare, int l students) College events (e.g., Open Day)
How do we shortlist RA applicants? Minimum CAP of 3.5 No Major Disciplinary Record Able to serve a full AY Able to attend RA Training Feedback from AAs, RFs, RAs, HHs References (optional)
A Note about Vacation RA (VRA) All successful RA are given the opportunity to be a Vacation RA during the December and Summer (May- July) breaks RA candidates can choose to start their appointment as a VRA as early as May 2023 Typically, the College require 3 Male and 3 Female VRA In the event of a shortfall, we run a separate mini recruitment which is open to all residents.
