7 Principles that form the ideal attitude for exceptional classroom management. You have to believe it! You need to believe deep down that you can have the class that you want! You have to believe in them. Focus on what you hope the students will be, don t be defeated. You have to stop making excuses. Don t give up on your students or yourself. You have to take responsibility. Take responsibility for the successes and failures of your classroom. You have to commit to doing what is right. Always enforce consequences from the first day of school until the last day of school. You have to ignore the squawking birds. Don t listen to other people (or colleagues that tell you that you can t do something). You have to become a student of classroom management. Stick to what works and always try something new to add in whenever possible. Drop whatever doesn t work!

SCENARIO PRACTICE You will be placed in partners or triads to practice scenarios related to The Classroom Management Secret
SCENARIO/ACTIVITY Imagine you are about to start the day with your students. The students have come in rowdy and you want to give directions and instructions after asking the students to be quiet, they are still not fulfilling their responsibilities. Practice one or more of the steps from What to do when you realize you ve lost control of your class , depending on how YOU normally begin the day or how you WOULD like to begin the day.
SCENARIO/ACTIVITY Yesterday in class, a student forgot to do his homework for the third time this week, you instantly got annoyed and raised your voice to your student about how irresponsible the student has been. The student puts his head down and refuses to speak the rest of the day. Practice the conversation you would have with that student the next time you see him using as many strategies as you can from the previous slide.
SCENARIO/ACTIVITY Imagine you have one or more students that are consistently not following through on directions, or a student that disrupts the class. Practice Step #5, referring back to the rule(s) that were broken, instead of making it personal to the student.
SCENARIO/ACTIVITY Imagine it s the beginning of your workday, think of the things that you do at the beginning of each day. In a group discussion, discuss: What can I do to be calmer in the morning so that I don t feel overwhelmed? Talk about what you would do and how you can give yourself more time to have a few minutes to breathe before students arrive. ***We will discuss responses from each table after the 3-minute timed discussion.
SCENARIO/ACTIVITY Imagine you re in the staff lounge and your colleagues are discussing the students you have in your class. They keep telling you, you can t make him/her change. You re wasting time and fighting a losing battle. Practice a response to this colleague to show that you believe in yourself, your classroom management plan, and your students.
CLOSURE ACTIVITY Please complete the following sentence frame Each person will answer the following sentence frame during a Whip Around activity! One classroom management activity or change I will implement in my classroom tomorrow is ___________________________.
