Research Paper Exercise 2
Using Sources

This is a multiple-choice exercise that
presents eight sentences that use
supporting material from a source, and
in each case, there is a problem with
how material is used from the source.
Your task is to identify what the
problem is in each sentence that uses
material from the source.
Research Paper Exercise 2
Using Sources

The multiple-choice options are
A) plagiarism = The writer has copied
words from the source but has not put the
words in quotation marks.
B) an inaccurate quotation = The writer has
put quotation marks around words but has
not copied the words in quotation marks
exactly as they appear in the original source.
Research Paper Exercise 2
Using Sources

The multiple-choice options are
C) material taken out of context = The
writer has copied the words correctly but
uses the words in a way that conveys a
meaning not intended by the original source.
D) an incorrect citation = The problem
involves the way that the writer has cited
the source of the information.

Research Paper Exercise 2
Using Sources

Option “D” (an incorrect citation) is the
easiest one to figure out:
Only the last name of the author should
appear in parentheses. If the full name
appears in parentheses, then there is an
incorrect citation.
If the author’s name is given in the
sentence, then the name should not be given
in parentheses.

Using Sources

An important hint from the Exercise
instructions:
HINT: Each of the multiple choice
options is the correct response to two
of the sentences
.

Research Paper Exercise 2
Using Sources

Our exercise uses a passage from a source
on Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You
Going, Where Have you Been?” but
otherwise is the same as our
“Practice
Quiz Using Sources.”
