Request for Pavement Design The Project Manager Role May 1, 2024 Connecting people, products and places safely and efficiently with customer focus, accountability and environmental sensitivity to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina
Request For Pavement Design Requests For Pavement Design All requests for pavement designs go to Shihai Zhang. Requests for a revised pavement design, should be sent to the engineer that provided the original design, and copy Shihai Zhang. For non-Interstate projects with lower volumes, trained personnel in the Divisions may elect to design the pavement themselves using the AASHTO 93 pavement design procedures . Contacts: State Pavement Design Engineer: Shihai Zhang, PE Pavement Design/Analysis Engineers: Josh Holland, PE Statesville Andrew Wargo, PhD, PE Raleigh 2
Request For Pavement Design Request For Pavement Design Pavement Design produces most of the Flexible (asphalt) and Rigid (concrete) Pavement designs for both Central and Division let Project. Consultants and Divisions do pavement design as well. Pavement Design writes scope and performs review on pavement design alternatives for Design-Build Project. The Pavement Design Engineer that does the pavement design seals the typical sections. Pavement Review Committee Criteria for projects to go through the Pavement Review Committee: Projects greater than 1.0 mile in length. Initial traffic greater than 10,000 vehicles per day. Reconstruction and relocation. If overlaying or retaining a large amount of existing pavement, more time will be required for M&T to conduct FWD testing prior to completing the pavement design recommendations. 3
Request For Pavement Design Information Needed for Pavement Design Project information (TIP, WBS, project description) Traffic data (traffic forecast) especially truck traffic (%Duals, %TTST). Latest plans with the typical sections. Specify if there will be an on-site detour or the need of any temporary pavement. Specify the number of months (length of time) the detour will be used. For bridge projects, specify if there will be shoulder berm gutters. Shoulder berm gutters (as with most curb sections) require 7 of asphalt (typically 3.0 surface course & 4.0 of intermediate course) to match the profile of the curb other than the base course. Since this is often not captured on a bridge typical section, it needs to be specifically noted. 4
