  3. Background & Purpose Introduction to Chickering and Gamson (1987) The Seven Principles: 1. Encourages contact between students and faculty 2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students 3. Encourages active learning 4. Gives prompt feedback 5. Emphasizes time on task 6. Communicates high expectations 7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning Applying the principles to online education

  5. Instructions for Group Activity Please break into small groups. Session presenters will assign each group specific standards for which the handout provided will be used to do the following : In column 2, identify the Chickering and Gamson principle or principles that align with the General Standard. In column 3, provide at least one application for quality instruction that addresses both the General Standard and the principle(s) identified. Present your group s ideas to the larger group.

Standards Alignment Quality Matters Chickering & Gamson Application For Quality Instruction GS 1: Course Overview and Introduction The overall design of the course is made clear to the learner at the beginning of the course. Example: Use of VoiceThread to create audio/video introduction that students can respond to with their own audio/video introduction. Creates visual conversation. Principle: 1. Encourages contact between students and faculty (interaction) GS 2: Learning Objectives (Competencies) Learning objectives or competencies describe what learners will be able to do upon completion of the course. GS 3: Assessment and Measurement Assessments are integral to the learning process and are designed to evaluate learner progress in achieving the stated learning objectives or mastering the competencies.

Standards Alignment Quality Matters Chickering & Gamson Application For Quality Instruction GS 4: Instructional Materials Instructional materials enable learners to achieve stated learning objectives or competencies. GS 5: Course Activities and Learner Interaction Course activities facilitate and support learner interaction and engagement. GS 6: Course Technology Course technologies support learners' achievement of course objectives or competencies

Standards Alignment Quality Matters Chickering & Gamson Application For Quality Instruction GS 7: Learner Support The course facilitates learner access to institutional support services essential to learner success. GS 8: Accessibility and Usability The course design reflects a commitment to accessibility and usability for all learners.
