Closing Thoughts: Peanut Butter & Chocolate Implementation a specified set of activities designed to put into practice an activity or program of known dimensions. (pg. 5) Fixsen, D. L., Naoom, S. F., Blase, K. A., Friedman, R. M. & Wallace, F. (2005). Implementation Research: A Synthesis of the Literature. H. (2009). Sustainability of Systems-Level Evidence-Based Practices in Schools: Current Knowledge and Future Directions. In W. Sailor, G. Dunlap, G. Sugai & R. H. Horner (Eds.), Handbook of positive behavior support (pp 327-352).
IMPLEMENTATION does not simply mean USE PBIS implementation means your teams are supporting the full and effective use of PBIS in practice (Fixsen et al., 2019) Your team has spent 2 years building this capacity (to fully and effectively use) Fixsen, D.L., Blase, K.A., & Van Dyke, M.K. (2019). Implementation Practice & Science. Chapel Hill, NC: Active Implementation Research Network. 14
Closing Thoughts: Implementation & Sustainability Implementation fidelity Team use of data # of other schools in the district adopting Critical mass of schools implementing 3 year prospective study 850 schools in 14 states Looked at school, district and practice level variables predicted sustained implementation McIntosh, K., Mercer, S. H., Nese, R. N. T., Strickland-Cohen, M. K., Kittelman, A., Hoselton, R., & Horner, R. H. (2018). Factors Predicting Sustained Implementation of a Universal Behavior Support Framework. Educational Researcher, 47(5), 307 316. 15
MN PBIS Patterns and Tips Your Regional Implementation Partners are Here to Help your teams to sustain! 1. Keep meeting regularly as a school team & use data Frequently abandoned critical feature Regular Team Meetings for Data-Based Decision Making (Kittelman et al., 2020) Celebrate and communicate your growth! 2. Fidelity has expiration date! (Fixsen) Normal for fidelity scores to drop out of training earlier MN cohorts demonstrated similar pattern and re-engaged by measuring fidelity Measure fidelity at least annually 3. Expect that implementation will fluctuate due to: Staff turnover Changing demographics Aligning with tiers 2 and 3 practices (competing initiatives) (Multiple school teams, do you have a district team? -Sustaining exemplar)
