  7. SURGICAL ACTIVITIES The surgical department undertakes surgeries in two main ways: at the hospital and at outreach centres. At the hospital, all types of adult and pediatric surgeries are carried out. On outreach, cataract and a few pterygium surgeries are performed. In 2020 outreach was done only at Kintampo and Yeji only.

  15. ACHIEVEMENTS and SUCCESSES IN 2021

  16. During the period under review, NCEH established a working relationships with 3 other health facilities which increased the outreach centres from two previously to five. This is obvious in the increased number of cataract surgeries done on outreach from 65 in 2020 to over 300 in 3 quarters of the year. We obtained an Argon and an SLT laser thus expanding the scope of our services. Patients needing retina laser now do not need to go to Accra or to Kumasi. We obtained an anaesthesia machine thus being able to do surgery on babies younger than 2 years old and making all paediatric surgery safer.

  17. We updated our EMR to include lasers and other procedures for easier data collection We updated our EMR to include diagnoses separately for future possible studies We introuced a credit system for patients who are not able to pay for our services fully.

  18. CHALLENGES

  19. First on the list is the increasing number of adult and nearly all paediatric patients who can not afford the cost of cataract and other eye surgeries. Delay in getting accredited by NHIA to accept insured client. Instruments breaking down Cost of supplies

  20. LESSONS LEARNT

  21. The biggest of the lessons learnt is that provision of instant care builds confidence in both patients and the referring officers. At NCEH patients receive care the same day or latest wait for a day on arrival on referral. Especially children, this has increased the number of referrals from the previous 3-5 per month to about 5-10 per month. We give feedback on all referrals to the referring colleagues. This helps in continuity of care and boosts the working relationship.

  22. PATIENT EDUCATION We have taken patient s education to another level. 1. Patient relatives are given the opportunity of watching cataract or other surgery on the monitor of the operating microscope, this takes away the fear that eyeballs are removed during cataract surgery. 2. They get their cataract in a plastic bag to show what we mean when we say cataract. 3. We have printed information on all the major conditions, we give this to patients based on the diagnosis and this helps them better understand their disease and makes them take responsibility in the treatment process. 4. Patient are also encouraged to google their condition by us writing down their diagnosis (ie those who can use the internet.) 5. Equally educative are the information on our website

  23. DATA MANAGEMENT

  24. We are constantly updating our EMR to suit our expanding services and to be able to serve our patients better. We send an automatic text reminder to each patient reminding them of their upcoming appointment. We keep all our data on Google drive and back it up on a weekly basis. We enter all our surgical data into an Excel sheet to analyze patient outcomes

  25. TARGETS FOR 2022 Increase the number of patients we serve including OPD, in-hospital and outreach surgery Perform more community outreach Increase the number of eyeglasses and medicines we sell Getting accredited by NHIS More media presence to spread eye health information in the community

  26. SUSTAINABILITY PLAN FOR NCEH NCEH is already sustainable except for services for non-paying patients Our income is from patients who pay for their care, and from the sale of eyeglasses and eye medications. We provide free OPD consultations for all who cannot pay and this is supported by our own IGF. As we grow, we hope we will be able to decrease our dependence on outside support even for non-paying patients, but support will always be necessary for the poorest members of society
