Slide Note

A STEEP analysis is a framework to:

help uncover the external factors that can influence an organisation and business area

identify any social, technological, economic, environmental and political trends that are likely to affect your work areas

identify trends that may impact your operating environment rather than the impacts themselves, which you’ll do in another activity

We’ll use the STEEP analysis to create future scenarios for your business area.

A STEEP analysis considers the following factors:

Social – for example what impact will changes to the Victorian population, age demographic have on our work? Are public attitudes changing?

Technological – for example what emerging technologies might affect the work we do?

Environmental – for example how will environmental forces impact our work? Are there any environmental outcomes we need to achieve?

Economic – for example what economic factors will impact the business going forward? Is the economy in a period of growth, stagnation or decline? Are incomes increasing or decreasing? How will this affect our work?

Policy – for example what policy changes could affect our work? How will government regulation affect the way we work?

By looking at each factor individually we are able to determine trends that will influence the environment we may be working in the future.

Focus on the trends, not the impact or solution at this stage.

You will focus on an individual STEEP factor and will work in groups of 3-4 to do this exercise, out of session. STEEP analysis worksheets.

Each group should meet to brainstorm some of the drivers of change (similar to the Look Back to Look Forward) for their factor using the prompt questions to assist with this. Some of these may be things you have observed others may come out of industry thought leadership, relevant industry websites and professional associations.

Explain the group composition.
