  4. Schedule Change If a student has a scheduling conflict they need to fill out the Google Form on schoology. Do NOT go to your counselor Counselors will call for students

  5. Your Schedule Students missing a class in their schedule need to report to the counseling center ONLY during the period in which the class is missing . For example, if 3rd period is missing on your schedule, ONLY go to the counselors during 3rd period Glitches can occur so it is also your responsibility to notify your counselor

Student Code of Conduct The purpose of the student handbook is to provide parents and students with an outline of the rights and responsibilities for those directly involved in the educational process. Students will be responsible for the policies of Nitro High School, Kanawha County Schools, and West Virginia Department of Education while in school, at any school sponsored activity, on the school bus, or in transit from home to NHS and from NHS to home. subject to NHS policies and KCS Student Behavior Policy J25 and Dress Code Policy J36 listed in the handbook.   8. Student Code of Conduct All policies may be viewed in entirety: on student iPads in iBooks or on the Kanawha County Schools website at www.kcs.kana.k12.wv.us.

  9. Arrival/Departure to School Nitro High School is a closed campus. All students must remain on campus once they arrive on the premises unless they follow the attendance guidelines for signing out. Students are not permitted across the street on the sidewalk, or in any parking lot at any time. Any student who leaves the school campus without permission during the school day will be subject to disciplinary action Until the first bell at 8:35 students should report to the commons or area. Students are not permitted upstairs or in the Baker building prior to 8:35 unless a prior arrangement has been made with a teacher.

  10. Care of School and Personal Property Students are responsible for the proper care of all books, supplies and furniture supplied by the school. Students, who disfigure property, break windows or do other damage to school or personal property or equipment will be required either to pay for the damage which is done or replace the item or both. Students should limit items brought to school to those necessary for school activities. The Administration is not responsible for unnecessary items brought to school which are lost or stolen. Lockers should be locked in halls and gymnasium dressing rooms at all times

  11. Kanawha County Schools Policy J36 Student Dress Code Policy

  12. Dress Policy Students are expected to follow the KCS Student Dress Code Policy J36 which can be found online and posted in the office. Students may be asked to change to a t-shirt provided by the school, Students will not be allowed to dress in a way which is distracting or disruptive to the educational process or is unsafe, as outlined in Policy J36. Students should be advised that dress code violations may lead to disciplinary action. Disclaimer: Administrative discretion will be utilized to determine safety violations or distractions. Students are responsible for adhering to Policy J36 at all times; questions regarding dress code should be forwarded to Mr. Barth.

  14. Drugs Imitation Drugs: Possession, Use Distribution or Sale. A student will not possess, use, distribute or sell any substance that is expressly represented or implied to be a controlled substance or simulate the effect and/or the appearance (color, shape, size and markings) of a controlled substance. Inhalant Abuse: A student will not deliberately inhale or sniff common products found in homes, schools and communities with the purpose of getting high . The action may be referred to as huffing, sniffing, dusting and/or bagging.

  15. Tobacco Possession/Use of Substances Containing Tobacco and/or Nicotine. A student will not unlawfully possess, use or be under the influence of any substance containing tobacco and/or nicotine or any paraphernalia intended for the manufacture, sale and/or use of tobacco/nicotine products in any building/area under the control of Kanawha County Schools, including all activities or events sponsored by Kanawha County Schools. This includes E-cigarettes, vapor pens or products. In addition to the penalties set forth below, the following penalties shall be applicable to a violation of the tobacco policy:

  16. Tobacco 1st Offense Confiscation of tobacco products (includes smokeless and smoking paraphernalia); Mandatory conference with parent/guardian; signing of contract by parent/student and school administration; mandatory attendance at smoking education class provided by the school nurse; mandatory two day assignment of Saturday school. Failure to fulfill the above requirements may result in an up to 3 day out of school suspension. Other Level I actions may be taken at the principal s discretion.

  17. Tobacco 2nd Offense Confiscation of tobacco products and smoking paraphernalia; up to 3 day out of school suspension, if possession or actual use of tobacco products has been determined; mandatory conference with the parent/guardian. Police report filed pursuant to W. Va. Code 16-9A-3. Referral to school nurse for the purpose of discussing possible cessation opportunities. 3rd Offense Confiscation of tobacco products and smoking paraphernalia; up to 5 day out of school suspension or referral to Alternative Learning Center. Police report filed pursuant to W. Va. Code 16-9A-3.

  18. Tobacco 4thand subsequent Offense Confiscation of tobacco products and smoking paraphernalia; up to 10 days Out-of-School suspension, or, in the alternative, referral to alternative learning center, if available. Police report filed pursuant to W. Va. Code 16-9A-3. All vape pens and electronic cigarettes fall under tobacco, whether they contain nicotine or not, they will be confiscated and not returned.

  19. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors Illegal Substance Related Behaviors. A student will not unlawfully possess, use, be under the influence of, distribute or sell any substance containing alcohol, over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana, narcotics, any other substance included in the Uniform Controlled Substances Act as described in West Virginia Code 60A-1-101, et seq. or any paraphernalia intended for the manufacture, sale and/or use of illegal substances in any building/area under the control of Kanawha County Schools, including all activities or events sponsored by Kanawha County Schools.

  20. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors This includes violations of WVBE Policy 2422.8 - Medication Administration, instances of prescription drug abuse, and the possession, use, being under the influence, distribution or sell of any substance that have known mind altering or function-altering effects upon the human body or that impair one s ability to safely perform his or her activities, specifically including, but not limited to, prescriptions drugs and over-the-counter medications; alcohol, drugs, and other substances made illegal under federal or state law; synthetic or designer drugs.

  21. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors In addition to the penalties set forth below, if a student has possession of, uses, is under the influence of or distributes a Substance described in the preceding paragraph, including, but not limited to alcohol, imitation drugs or inhalants, or possesses a drug device the following penalties shall apply: (A principal may request enhanced penalties if there are aggravating circumstances associated with the substance or alcohol possession or distribution.)

  22. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors 1st Offense for use, possession or being under influence Confiscation of the substances, drug devices or alcohol; Suspension (10 days Mandatory); Completion of drug program approved by KCS (Mandatory); Criminal charges filed; Drug counseling by school psychologist

  23. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors 2nd Offense for use, possession or being under influence or 1st Offense for distribution Confiscation of the substances, drug devices or alcohol; Suspension (10 days Mandatory); Criminal charges filed; Recommended transfer to an alternative school for placement for remainder of current semester and the next succeeding semester; a petition for reinstatement to the home school may be made to the Superintendent after the student has attended at least eighteen (18) weeks in the alternative school. Petitioning does not guarantee an early return.

  24. Illegal Substance Related Behaviors 3rd and subsequent Offense for use, possession or being under the influence or 2ndand subsequent offense for distribution Expulsion and filing criminal charges. (Mandatory)

  25. Searches Searches of Students. Under ordinary circumstances the search of a student by a teacher or other school official is permitted, if there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will turn up evidence that the student has violated or is violating either the law or rules of the school. The extent of the search must be reasonably related to the objectives of a search and not excessively intrusive in light of the sex of the student and nature of the infraction. However, strip searches are not permitted under any circumstances. Any searches of students will be conducted in the presence of an adult witness. Any contraband property discovered as a result of a search may be confiscated.

  26. Car Searches Car Searches A student s car, while on school property, is subject to search by a teacher or other school official if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that the search will turn up evidence that a student has violated or is violating either the law or rules of the school. Such searches will be conducted in the presence of an adult witness.

  27. Locker Searches Locker Searches. A student s locker may be searched if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that the search will turn up evidence that a student has violated or is violating either the law or rules of the school. Such searches will be conducted in the presence of an adult witness. Furthermore, by accepting a locker a student shall be deemed to have consented to the periodic inspection thereof. The school principal shall retain keys to all lockers.

  28. Canine Assisted Searches Canine Assisted Locker/Facility Inspections. School principals are authorized to arrange for the use of canines that have been trained in the detection of unlawful drugs or explosives to assist in periodic inspections of student lockers, other school facility areas or grounds. Any unlawful drugs or explosives that are discovered as a result of a canine assisted inspection may serve as a basis for student disciplinary action under the terms of this policy. Only with the specific permission of the Superintendent may canines be used to conduct random searches of students.

  29. Weapons Possession of a firearm or deadly weapon. According to W.Va. Code 18A-5-1a(a), a student will not possess a firearm or deadly weapon as defined in W.Va. Code 61-7-2, on any school bus as defined in W.Va. Code 17A-1-1, or in or on any public or private primary or secondary education building, structure, facility or grounds thereof, including any vocational education building, structure, facility or grounds thereof, or at any school-sponsored function as defined in W.Va. Code 61-7-11a. Notice of disciplinary action involving a firearm violation must be submitted by a principal within 72 hours of a violation

  30. Weapons As defined in W.Va. Code 61-7-2, a "deadly weapon" means any device intended to cause injury or bodily harm, any device used in a threatening manner that could cause injury or bodily harm, or any device that is primarily used for self-protection. Deadly weapons include, but are not limited to, blackjack, gravity knife, knife, switchblade knife, nunchuka, metallic or false knuckles, pistol, or revolver. The term deadly weapon also includes explosive, chemical, biological or radiological materials. A deadly weapon may also include the use of a legitimate tool, instrument, or equipment as a weapon including, but not limited to, pens, pencils, compasses, or combs, with the intent to harm another.

  31. Weapons For purposes of this policy deadly weapon also includes any instrument which is designed to be used to produce serious bodily injury or death, or is readily adaptable to such use. Examples of such weapons include, but are not limited to blank pistol, signal pistol, starter pistol, stun-gun or other device designed to produce an electrical shock, pellet gun, or BB gun; any razor (e.g., straight, regular, retractable, etc.); any defensive device (e.g., gas repellent, mace, stun-gun chemical sprays, etc.); chains, club, nightstick, rings, pipe, studded or pointed bracelets, ax handles, bullets, ammunition of any type, fireworks of any type and size, smoke bomb, stink bomb, any type of homemade bomb.

  32. Cell Phone/Electronic Devices Students are permitted to use county issued iPads or any other electronic devices inside the classroom, at the teacher s discretion. Failure to follow the rules will result in teacher confiscation, to be returned at the end of class. Failure to turn over your device to the teacher will result in disciplinary action. Three documented infractions will result in a parental contact from the teacher. A student can lose the privilege to possess cell phones, iPads, and other personal electronic devices if a student repeatedly violates the policy.

  33. iPads It is the students responsibility to bring fully charged iPads to school every day. Students who have their iPad with them in class, but are not charged, will be assigned one day of lunch detention per infraction. Students who do not bring their iPad to school with them will be subject to disciplinary action. Lost iPads should be reported immediately and substituting phones for iPads in the event of a lost or forgotten iPad is strictly at the teachers discretion.

  34. Attendance Procedures Regular attendance is a crucial component to academic success. Students need to make every effort to attend each and every class every day. The following procedures have been established to facilitate this expectation at NHS Tardiness or absence from class beyond ten minutes constitutes an official absence from that class.

  35. Attendance Procedures All students should be on time and attend school every day. WV State law requires a legal notification be mailed home when a student has five (5) or more unexcused absences, along with a letter from the Kanawha County Prosecutor s Office. All students tardy for 1stperiod must sign in prior to going to class. When tardy for other periods, report directly to class All students arriving late or returning from an appointment must sign in

  36. Driver Eligibility House Bill 4535 removed the requirements for attendance and satisfactory academic progress as a condition of initial licensing. Therefore, we are no longer using the old Driver Eligibility Certificate when notifying DMV of students being eligible to obtain a driver's permit or license. Students can go to the DMV and obtain a driver's permit or license without receiving any type of form from their school. Students who fail to maintain academic progress, accrue excessive absences (10 consecutive or 15 total) , suspended for a level IV offense, or drops out, will have their privileges restricted.

  37. Driving to School Students are discouraged from driving vehicles to school. However, those students who drive to Nitro High School must complete an online form, pay $40 and display parking pass sticker on their car. Students are not to be on the parking lot at any time during the school day, including lunch. Students are ONLY permitted to park in the main parking lot (NO Baker and NO Breezeway)

  38. Driving to School Student drivers who disregard parking and traffic safety will lose their driving privilege. Students are not permitted to park in Staff assigned parking spaces All vehicles are subject to being searched regardless if a parking pass was purchase Excessive late arrivals will result in the loss of driving privileges

  39. Driving to Ben Franklin There is transportation to and from Ben Franklin each day: Bus departs in the morning in front of Main Entrance between 8:30-8:35 You will eat first lunch and the bus departs around 12:30 DON T MISS THE BUS

  40. Graduation Requirements According to Kanawha County Schools Policy, students may not participate in the Commencement ceremony unless they have met the graduation requirements of 24 credits. Seniors who have not earned the required credits for graduation must attend classes until the last day of school for underclassmen, as designated by the school calendar

  41. Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities Must have a 2.0 non-weighted GPA (grade-point average) at the conclusion of the semester grading period in December or May. In computing a student s GPA for the purpose of this policy, all classes taken by the student (including credit recovery and virtual school) and for which a final grade is recorded, are to be considered The student s eligibility will be determined by the previous semester s GPA. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA at the conclusion of any semester may regain their eligibility at the end of the following nine-week grading period providing that he/she has a 2.0 GPA at that time.

  42. Tardy Policy - REVISED It is the belief of the NHS administration that excessive tardies greatly inhibit the learning of all students; therefore, habitual tardies will result in disciplinary action. Students who are tardy more than three times per 9 weeks will face disciplinary action. NHS teachers will assign lunch detention on the fourth tardy for a 9 weeks period. Each additional tardy will result in escalating disciplinary action.

  43. Tardy Policy - REVISED Failure to serve assigned detentions will result in subsequent discipline Students are responsible for communicating detention conflicts with teachers, and are responsible for all detention obligations Tardiness or absence from class beyond TEN minutes constitutes an official absence from that class.

  44. Make-Up Work Policy Upon the first day back after an absence, each student is expected to check with each of his/her teachers regarding any missing work. Note that the Make-Up policy does not extend to any assignment made prior to the student s absence. Assignments made prior to the student s absence are to be submitted upon the student s return to class. Other due dates for work remain unaffected by the absences.

  45. Make-Up Work Policy The student is responsible for taking tests/quizzes announced prior to days missed in the date established. KCS Make-up Policy states, that for each day absent, the student will have one day allowed for make-up work. Teachers may establish other alternatives in their syllabus. Teachers and student will determine time and place for making up activities.

  46. Medications All medications should be taken to Ms. Evans (Nurse Office) immediately upon arrival at school. Over the counter medications must be in the original container and require written instructions and a medication administration form signed by the parent. Prescription medications must be in the original container and in addition to the above, require a medication administration form signed by the prescribing physician. Medication administration forms can be obtained from Ms. Evans.

  47. Drop Out Policy Drop-Out Policy: Parents or legal guardians of any student planning to drop out of school must first call the school and schedule an appointment with the principal. The student, along with his or her parents and or legal guardians, must attend the conference. It must be understood that once a student drops out of school, he/she forfeits the right to special privileges or attendance at special school functions as a guest, including Winter Formal and Prom Dropping out of school is highly discouraged

  48. Lunch Detention Teachers will be assigning lunch detention for: *Disruptions *Sleeping *Tardies *Refusing to work Students will be given instructions and dates for lunch detention upon assignment. Failure to serve lunch detention will result in further disciplinary action.

  49. Off Limits and Accessibility After the first bell students are expected to be in their assigned class or have a note from their teacher explaining where they should be. Advisory is for students assigned to that advisory ONLY. The commons are OFF LIMITS during class. There should be no students in the commons during class time. Students are not permitted to return to the parking lot after they enter the building in the morning without permission from the office. The back hallway is closed at all times except for through traffic.

  50. Hall Passes Each classroom will have two hall passes with a specific Bathroom assigned to them. Students are to use the restroom closest to their classroom when released from class with bathroom passes. No exceptions. Students are not to be in the hall during class time without a note or pass.
