Inclusivity

I believe that this image is trying to
portray that the First Nations didn’t experience
inclusivity, instead, they went through
assimilation, where they adopted European
culture and were forced to forget their own
culture – this is shown because their clothing
and colours eventually get drained out of the
image from right to left.

Another way to interpret this image is
that First Nations people were able to go back to
their old culture and pass it onto their children
again after losing it from assimilation. They were
accepted and included into present society
again and have their clothing, languages, arts,
etc. back. This is shown from left to right, where
they gain their colour and culture back.

Message

I think the message that this image
depicts can be interpreted in two ways:
 1) it can represent culture being stripped
away from the First Nations people due to
residential schools and assimilation
2) it can represent children slowly
relearning their culture and going back to
the ways of their predecessors before
children were forced to forget their
language, customs, and culture in
residential schools.

Conclusion

In my mind, this image can be
analyzed in different ways, however they still
represent inclusivity, just in a different
manner.

This image shows us that
assimilation and inclusivity are two separate
things, assimilation is what happened to the
First Nations people, they were forced to
learn European culture and forget their own.
Instead of that, we should learn to include
their culture (and other cultures as well) into
our society, rather than having them
conform to a certain cultural standard.

  3. Visuals In this visual, the people on the very right are have plenty of colour and emotion; they also have many cultural items and clothing. Each person looks distinct from one another with their different hairstyles and differently coloured clothing. In the middle, they mostly look the same, you can t distinguish them from one another because their hair and clothing are all the same. The only colour they have left is on their faces and skin, with little to no emotion. The people on the left have no colour at all left on them at all, and emotionless faces. Telling them apart is almost impossible; they look almost the exact same There are no clear lines in this image, instead the image flows into a transition from colourful to plain grey.
