Equip yourself with the essential vocabulary and sequence to provide clear explanations using time conjunctions, chronological order, and technical vocabulary. Practice explaining the workings of familiar objects like bicycles and toasters with precision and impersonal language. Evaluate and compare different explanations to analyze the use of technical terms and correct sequence. Enhance your explanation skills by breaking down complex processes into easily understandable steps.

  1. Explanation Text Lesson 4 Explaining how something works

  2. We are equipping ourselves with the vocabulary for giving an explanation. Success criteria I have thought about the language that starts explanation sentences. I have broken the explanation down into a clear sequence. Grammar and Vocabulary Time conjunctions Chronology/Sequence

  3. Look at these objects. Choose one to explain how it works. Without having time to prepare, verbally explain to someone. Imagine that they have never seen this object/gadget before.

  4. How did you do? What technical vocabulary did you use? How did your sentences begin? What was hard? What was easy?

  5. How a bicycle works To ride a bicycle, the rider sits on the seat and places the feet on the pedals. The pedals are connected by a chain to the back wheel. When the rider pushes on the pedals, the back wheel turns. This moves the bicycle forward. The rider steers by turning the handlebars or by leaning. Very precise impersonal language Chronological Technical vocabulary

  6. How a toaster works A toaster is a machine for toasting food such as sliced bread and bagels. Toasted bread is called toast. Other toastable products may be described as toaster pastry. A typical toaster uses infrared radiation to heat a piece of bread. The heat is usually produced by conducting electricity through nichrome wires (Joule heating). The toasting process consists of reducing the bread's water content (originally ~35% of total weight), raising its temperature, and slightly charring and caramelizing its surface. The caramelization process is a chemical reaction in which the complex starch molecules break apart into simpler sugar molecules upon heating. That is why toast is usually sweeter than normal bread.

  7. Discuss the two different explanations Did they use the following? Very precise impersonal language Chronology were they written in the correct sequence? Technical vocabulary did they use words specific to the explanation?

  8. So, to recap: We are equipping ourselves with the vocabulary for giving an explanation. Success criteria I have thought about the language that starts explanation sentences. I have broken the explanation down into a clear sequence. Useful Grammar and Vocabulary Time conjunctions Chronology/Sequence

  9. Assignment to go with this lesson I want you to find or think of a gadget that you have at home. It could be one of the ones we have looked at in this presentation. Have a go at giving a VERBAL explanation of how it works. You may want to write notes to help you. If you want to send in a recorded explanation and you know how to do this, then you may, but you don`t have to.
