SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD Was a way for Edwards to affect his audience Featured both eerie language, and comforting language Used figurative language, mix of author s voice and portrayal of mood to convey emotions
FRIGHTENING LANGUAGE EXAMPLE 1 His anger is great toward them as to those that are actually suffering the executioners of the fierceness of His wrath in Hell. Uses imagery to help depict the scene of people of getting killed, as well as strong language, such as fierceness , and wrath .
FRIGHTENING LANGUAGE EXAMPLE 2 He is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them. Hell is described by the flames, and shows the lives of sinners being consumed by terror
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE EXAMPLE 3 There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God. It shows a clear description of where the sinners are bound to find themselves, through the fiery pit that awaits them
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE EXAMPLE 4 O sinner consider the fearful danger you are in, it is a great furnace of wrath There is a sense of upcoming dread, and a sense of imagery which makes it frightening as it makes visualize these aspects leading to frightening thoughts and inspiring heavy frightful emotions.
COMFORTING EXAMPLE 1 However you have reformed your life in many things and may have your religious affiliation Although you may have sinned, you can still reform yourself, and bring hope to change your life.
COMFORTING EXAMPLE 2 You probably aren t sensible of this; you find you are kept out of hell, but do not see the hand of God in it; Even though you don t recognize or are aware of God, he will still keep you out of hell, and prevent you from your demise.
FEAR OR HOPE? By having hope, you are able to motivate yourself to achieve your goals. Fear can help you change your opinions Real-Life Examples include: To get A, you need a 90 on the next test, therefore you motivate yourself to study harder In politics, when fearing a leader, you can change your opinions on him/her, and help spur you into action to avoid being fearful.
LOGIC OR EMOTION? Edward discussing and recognizing the power of God Power of God that keeps you up Edward attempts to scare you into being a better Christian through fear and this is his use of emotion
